Hey there everyone.
'Everyone' being anyone who reads this, usually those who are 'watching' me on LJ.
but anyways, Day two of Wondercon is down, and I'm rather sad. So much fun stuff has happened, and tomorrow, well, in a few hours, today will be the last day.
What is Wondercon? The short version is that it's the Northern Californian smaller brother of the San Diego Comicon.
If you don't know what that is, well, I'm sad for you and make use of the computer you have sitting in front of you to find out. Just got home and I don't feel like elaborating and copying-pasting links on correct texts right now...
I can tell you a LOT of things about today, but I'll cut to the chase on the biggest part of the night:
I was able to preview the first 45 minutes of Disney/Pixar's latest film: UP
After a few words of Pete Docter (director, and also director of my one of my top-favorite pixar flicks, monsters inc), we flew into the movie, and-
well, I can't tell you.
But what I can tell you is that, even for just 45 minutes, there's already a promising film right there with a story that actually goes places and a story that tickles your emotions.
literally, The first 10-so minutes of the film will make you WEEP.
You thought killing off Nemo's mom in the begining of Finding Nemo was sad? You haven't seen UP's entire sweet-exposition that brings up to date to our poor main character.
You know how some stories want to have you in the same emotional mindset as our character and what not? You will get that, in the begining, non-the-less, and no doubt will they continue to pixar play with your heart strings later in the film.
When you see something that literally crushes our character's heart, you will feel it too.
But enough of the crying, I already used enough kleenex at the theater.
Hey, I always loved the emotional aspect of Monsters Inc, which is a reason why it's my top favorite, but Pete Docter really pushes it with UP, in a good way, hopefully.
But moving along for the sake of moving along, the movie has a TON of knee-slapping laughs to deliver, believe me!
The humor in UP is grade-A+ quality. If you watch this movie and DON'T literally Laugh Out LOUD at some of the jokes I encountered, you are a mean mean person.
There's already a running-gag that seems to have followed out of the theater. I'd say it, but I'd hate to ruin it.
The jokes that seem to work best are the physical ones that work with the wacky characters. god, I can just see all the merchandise now...
Kinda sounds like I'm shilling out to Disney/Pixar, huh? well, I'm getting no money out of this: Just another fan who loves their work. And this may just be their best.
i swear, If UP doesn't win even more oscars next year, that will be an utter shame.
If you're still iffy on the story, Don't
If there's a lesson I ever learned from Pixar, it was "Never underestimate them"
When I first saw Jesse the Cowgirl for Toy Story 2, I thought "That will never work!"
Seeing a trash-compacting robot in a romance movie, same reaction.
yet, They all just seem to work.
When I first heard early word about UP being about an grumpy old man and a perky little kid in the jungle, I thought Pixar might be crazy.... Again...
But seeing what I saw today has just sold me.
If you were somehow disappointed with WALL-E, somehow, (you know, as great as the movie is, it's still not entirely for everyone), you will enjoy UP. hell, Regardless if you do or don't: I can see this as beeing a top-rated film!
...eh, That is if the ending's right. still, So far from what I've seen, it' worth it.
-checks-
Looks like it's about time for my rest, so good night, and hopefully I'll talk a bit more about Wondercon soon, be it on LiveJournal or elsewhere...
EDIT: I'm thinking about (finally) making an UP fan LJ community... Just ironing out the possible name to place-hold...
(FYI: This was not in 3D. This was a regular 2D screening on a nice crisp-clean digital projector. however, Scenes in the sky do seem to pop, since the sky is all a neutral blue and colorful house/balloons stand out, and literally, it stands out where it kinda seems to have depth. well, That's if you get a screening with a good projector...)
