Eight arms to hold you

Another great album you all (ehem, both of you) have probably heard me raving about is Eight Arms to Hold You by Veruca Salt. For one thing, its the only hard rock album where women wrote the songs, women front the band, and its good all the way through. (other such albums sure exist somewhere, but I haven't found them yet) It's basically just well written pop songs in the style of 90s grunge. Which is a great idea! It reminds me a lot of Stone Temple Pilots; just good grunge-pop. Frankly, Eight Arms to Hold you is as good as any STP album. Scratch that, Purple is a little better now that I think about it. But just a smidge. It would be more if the hidden track wasn't actually someone else. Like STP, Veruca Salt was disliked by critics, because apparently critics can't like bands that write enjoyable songs if they perceive the group to be riding some kind of bandwagon.

Unfortunately VS never had another great album. The two women who front the band, Nina and Louise, were basically like John and Paul. Nina was good and light poppy stuff and and Louise was good at rocking hard. They worked well together, but of course, they are women, so they got in a physical fight, and a man was involved, and Nina left the band. Nina went on to do her pop stuff which was might have been decent but had no gravitas. Louise kept the band and wrote stuff that rocked pretty hard but suffered from awkward angry woman scorned syndrome. Anyway, the album EATHY is some great 90s nostalgia.

More interesting trivia...Lousie was dating Dave Grohl in the late 90s. Grohl also dated Melissa Auf Der Mar who can be seen feeling up Courtney Love in Hole's *excellent* remake of Gold Dust Woman. You may not think she's all that hot, but she did front a Black Sabbath cover band called Hand of Doom. That's sexy.
