So. Greed's thoughts on Greed Ling k thx!
To start with, there's the identity issue. Greed is Greed. He is greedy. He doesn't like sharing things, and he also goes really fucking nuts when something of his is taken away from him. Taking away what he is? Well, that leads to what we like to call complications!
It's not an issue of name. If Ling were just some guy named Greed, that would irritate Greed, but it wouldn't be the same. It wouldn't be as though someone else were trying to share what he is. But Greed's not just a name. It's his personality, it's his drive, it's his function, it's intrinsic to every part of his being. And it's not just Ling's name, either. It means the same thing to Ling, which means they're sharing or that Ling's stolen this aspect of his uniqueness and what it means to be him, and so yeah it drives Greed a little nuts. I AM GREED. FUCK YOU. YOU ARE NOT GREED. GREED IS ME AND YOU CANNOT TAKE ME FROM ME. OR I WILL CUT A BITCH.
At the same time, Ling can't take Greed from Greed, and Greed knows it and my god that was a confusing sentence. XD What I mean is that Greed, as annoyed and slightly batshit as he is over the I am Greed! thing, also doesn't feel he's in any danger of being any less GREED. To lose his Greedness is unthinkable. Just because there's another one, and just because this one is the "active" one, that doesn't mean Greed's not Greed anymore, no matter what Ling says. Because there isn't anything else for him to BE but Greed. Like I said, it's not a job title. It's not something he can lose, or feel inadequate over, like "New Greed is here and Father likes him better DDD:" So while it seriously fucks with his head to have another Greed around and he feels generally DDD< about someone else "sharing" his identity and taking his name away from him (by sheer virtue of not calling him by it, and having gotten here first so that people like THAT BITCH TOMO call him Greed), Greed's not exactly spazzing out over "U STOLE MY POSITION FROM ME." No one can make him stop being Greed. Full stop. He is not physically or mentally or emotionally capable of the change that would require and he knows it and likes it.
In fact, the whole "Father made a new Greed!" thing is also something of a comfort, in its way. In Greed's mind, this lets him off the hook of the "responsibilities" of being Greed, the shirking of which got him killed. He's still Greed, but he's not FATHER'S Greed anymore, and fuck, he never wanted to be anyway! He refused to be, and he got his ass killed for it! So now there's another Greed to be an idiot and take on those responsibilities, so if Father or any of the other homunculi or anything ever show up here, OR if Greed does manage to escape back into Amestris or any other world alive once he's out of camp (and this is the assumption he's operating on; Greed does NOT think he'll end up back in Hell when all is said and done; he simply won't allow this to be the case) . . . if Greed's ever in a position again where he's in contact with Father or the homunculi of his world, he's off the hook. He can go off and do whatever the fuck he wants, because there's another Greed to pick up his slack and they can have the Seven Sins or whatever and be a big happy family while Greed goes back to accumulating bitches and living forever. FUCK YEAH.
. . . The thing is, Greed knows it's not going to be that simple. Not because it's Deeply Wrong to have eight Sins running around or anything, or because Father's going to want to shut his mouth permanently rather than risk Greed giving away info like he did with the Elrics the first time he got killed. That stuff hasn't really occured to him yet. 8D
No, the problem is that after having spoken with Ling a few times, Greed realizes that Ling IS Greed. He doesn't think Ling is HIM . . . precisely. . . . Yet. But Ling is Greed and he can't change what he is any more than Greed can change what HE is, and so Greed is assuming that Ling's avarice is going to catch up with him, probably sooner rather than later. He's Greed; he's going to want something. Something Father can't give him. And he's going to leave, and he's going to be successful for a time, and then he's going to slip up and get himself killed. Why? Because this is what happened to Greed, and Ling is Greed. Greed knows what he is and what it means and he knows he can't control his urges, because that's what it means to be Greed. And so the idea that any Greed could end up differently than he did is incomprehensible to him. A Greed who did not want more than Father could give him would not be a Greed at all. Ling is Greed. Therefore, Ling will betray Father. QED. It's Greed's wholehearted belief that Ling is fucked.
And he--in a way he feels smug about that, like "O ho ho you want to be Greed so badly well wait until you figure out what it means to be ME, n00b, your ass better CALL somebody!" And on the other hand, he doesn't like it. It disturbs him in ways he can't explain. It upsets him a little, where his feelings aren't. |D
Because the fact is that Ling is the only person in camp, or in the world, ANY world EVER, that Greed could really genuinely care about on SOME level. As of right now, he doesn't. It's entirely possible that he never will. But Ling is him, and Greed cares about himself and himself alone. So while right now he could watch Ling die or suffer without caring in the way a human would, on some level, it would also make him very deeply uncomfortable. It'd be like watching himself get fucked over, and he's been there and done that and doesn't really want to do it again, even if it's not HIS body it's happening to. Greed feels a connection with Ling. Being in the same space with him feels strange. Not unpleasant, but there's some--kind of presence there because there are two of him, it's him and they shouldn't both exist and yet here they are. Inside that body is what he is and Greed can feel that in the fabric of reality.
So . . . Greed doesn't really want Ling to get fucked over by Father. It's going to happen, and he knows it. But he drops things into conversation like "Just wait until what happened to me happens to you" and such both as a way to taunt Ling and as a genuine warning. This isn't gonna last, kid, because Greed can never last, but maybe you can get away with it the way I didn't.
And in the end, if you push ALL OF THOSE ISSUES aside, Greed finds himself liking Ling. He can't not like Ling, because Ling is him. They butt heads and get bitchy and will never be able to share anything or "get along" in a normal way, but Ling is him, and Greed feels that they understand each other on an intrinsic level. He gets how the guy's mind works, and he likes it, because he likes himself. And it's actually kind of fun bitching at him and pushing each other's buttons. Greed enjoys it quite a bit. Ling's existence is irritating like a pebble in your shoe because you can't get rid of it and it shouldn't be there and it presses on you in weird places hurr hurr, but it's also--kinda cool. Hey, it's me. 'Sup, me? What's on your mind? OH WAIT, I KNOW. BECAUSE YOU ARE ME. |D
So Greed both enjoys and hates talking to Ling, but mostly really enjoys it sekritly and will probably annoy Ling in the future about . . . Greed-y stuff. "Dude, how the fuck do we DEAL with this sex rule? What's up with that Ed kid? You met Himeko yet? Man, don't you want some bitches? I want me some bitches." Because even if they can never really live in harmony, they will always understand each other. ♥
. . . Finally, yes Greed is attracted to and wants Ling on some level that doesn't really have anything at all to do with Ling's looks or their interactions. It's that whole "this is me" thing again. |D Greed would totally do himself. HE KNOWS HOW AWESOME HE IS. And there's some primal "this is another version of me and thus I must make it mine, I must make me a part of me" mentality going on there. So Greed would do Ling, just on pure basic instinctual principle.
BUT WHO WOULD TOP?
