The essential underpinnings of Sophocles' argument is that those people who are doing the things that you would presume they know are bad are actually doing them because they think that they are good. A masochist can come up with several reasons to hurt themself: they need to be punished, there is nothing else that they can feel right now, it is one of the few things that they have control over in their life and it is important to remind themself that they do have control over something, etc. People are inherently lazy and they usually won't do something unless it does serve what they deem to be a beneficial purpose. Why would they take the time to do something that they thought was bad? Murders believe that they are doing something necessary, either necessary to themself or to society or to someone who they care about. Hitler either must have thought he was actually supposed to create a master race or felt much safer when he was in control of the country. It isn't that these people don't realize that they are doing something that is societally labeled as 'evil', but they themselves believe that they are doing something beneficial despite what other people will argue.
