Perhaps its because i know my home state too well. or perhaps i don't know others well enough but the fact that The Land of Women takes place in a Detroit suburn area really made me dislike the movie. Now all props to Adam Brody for making out with a MILF (Meg Ryan) and her daughter within the same week, but poor choices by the writers to place the story in a well-off neighborhood of Detroit. Let's face it, unless you're in Bloomfield or Grosse Pointe, you're really out of luck. The movie also lacked any sort of simily with the lower east side; daughter, Lucy, said she was off to get a "soda" in one scene and in another made a mention of "sneakers" - with all due respect, i can tell you the writers must have picked a place on the map that was far enough north as to not have the actors have to speak with an accent. Personally i would have liked to see a different cast. The husband of Sarah, we learn was committing adultry and although his persona is left lingering on the minds of worthy audiences, the apolgetic and apathetic wife pissed me off.
The man vs. nature twist was a breathe of fresh air. Cancer is a strong prevalance in many homes today, but the emotional recalls from the youngest daughter were forced, awkward and unnatural to the core. Advice offered to all though about to write a book/movie/poem/letter/coding for NASA's security system... keep us guessing and tie up loose ends.
Unfortunately this movie was not a surprise by any means, and the loose ends of minor characters who would have had, if produced correctly, profoundly moving performances lacked any enterance. At least the movie is over and there is no more. good riddens.
AND.. i am no writer but isn't the title supposed to have some sort of meaning - maybe some jab of dialogue?
