Most of her things were already packed and sent ahead, but there were a few things that Hoshi left until the very end. So she was going around, checking the closet and under the bed, to make sure she had everything, like a certain beagle who did not want to go in his pet carrier ( Read more... )

Of course Annja was there to say goodbye.

"You are going to visit, right?"

"Of course!" said Hoshi. "Who knows, I might come rushing back after a few days with my family. Besides, Joan and I are getting an apartment that's not too far from the causeway, so I might be visiting a lot."

"Oh good," Annja said with a smile and relief in her voice. "What did your father and your captain say about you staying so close to here?"

"After what he saw at graduation, my father was worried that living at home would be too boring for me," said Hoshi. "As for the captain, he and I don't talk much these days, but he wrote a nice letter of recommendation to help me get into a civilian linguistics program at university."

She smiled, leaning against the doorjam. "Was that a relief for you? Because I know that my... family... was worried about me having to choose between where I feel at home and where I think I have to be."

"It was a big relief," said Hoshi, smiling. "I wasn't happy when Dad showed up for graduation, but it was a good thing he got to see what it's like here in Fandom."

"And that you can hold your own?"

"Definitely," said Hoshi. "I have it on good authority that my father was clutching Captain Archer's elbow throughout the entire ceremony, so it was no surprise he thought I handled it better than he could."

Annja laughed. "Yeah, Roux said that he handled it a lot better than Garin did, but I know that both of them would have been at a loss as to what to do if it had been them." She grinned. "And they've been around a very long time."

"Unfortunately, my father didn't get to meet Hurley while he was here. But that might be okay, because he probably didn't need to know that I had a boyfriend," said Hoshi. "But I just got to meet Hurley's mom a few weeks ago when I went to visit him. It seemed to go well."

"Oh lucky you! You got to skip out on the family threatening the boyfriend scene." She shook her head. "At least Hurley's mother didn't tell Hurley within your hearing that you made an okay first girlfriend that he could dump for a more appropriate one after you gave him heirs?"

Someone may still be a little bit bitter about the brunch she endured with Sean's uncle.

"How is Hurley?"

Hoshi raised an eyebrow. "Don't tell me that someone actually did that. And Hurley is doing just fine, except that his mother thought he made up an imaginary girlfriend so she would stop nagging him. Then I called one day and she picked up the phone, so I had to come out there and show here that I wasn't imaginary. She was nice, but I think she was still in shock that I was real."

"Sean's uncle told him, right in front of me as if I didn't exist that I was an okay first wife and after I gave him heirs he could set me aside and marry someone more appropriate. I'm not sure which of us was holding who back. I was livid and really tempted to summon the sword just to make him piss his pants. I didn't want to cause more headaches for Sean though."

She shook her head. "Poor Hurley. I'm a little annoyed his mom would think such a thing." She smiled. "Next time he can come visit, the four of us should get together and do something. Oh, and you still have to come with me to Costa Rica sometime."

You know, when mercenaries weren't showing up to kill her.

"I really hope you crossed him off the holiday card list," said Hoshi, frowning slightly. "We should get together, if Hurley can get out here. He's only managed it once, but that was the weekend I turned into a bird. I think sometimes that the island is laughing at us."
