Starfleet Command, San Francisco, 2146

Captain Archer appeared somber and unsmiling as he waved Hoshi towards an empty chair. "I hope you understand just how serious this situation is, Cadet Sato," he said. "This is the third time this month that I've had to talk you about breaking the rules and regulations you agreed to when you joined Starfleet."

"But sir, if you'd let me explain..." Hoshi protested, but Archer cut her off.

"Silence, cadet! It was bad enough when you got arrested at the 602 Club for underage drinking," continued Archer.

"But I'll be 17 in a few weeks!" argued Hoshi.

"That's still too young to drink in San Francisco," said Archer in a stern tone of voice. "Then there's the time you spent the weekend in my apartment without authorization while I was in Australia supervising a survival training exercise."

"You gave me your key so I could take care of Porthos, and he was upset about having to stay overnight by himself," she reminded him. "Besides, your neighbors were really happy that Porthos didn't keep them up with his barking while I was there."

Archer raised an eyebrow. "And I suppose that's why you smuggled Porthos into the dormitory the next week, despite the 'no pets' policy?" he asked.

"It just seemed easier to take care of him that way while you were in Montana," Hoshi tried to explain.

"But this latest incident is the worst of it," continued Archer. "You broke the arm of a commanding officer because he tried to break up your poker game! How in the world can you explain that?"

Hoshi stood up a little straighter as she spoke. "Sir, I tried to explain, but the commander wouldn't listen to me. He went to sweep the chips off the table, and I tried to stop him. That led to a physical confrontation, and when I felt threatened, I used a self-defense move."

"You're saying you broke his arm in self-defense?" asked Archer, frowning. "That still doesn't justify running a poker game in the dormitory when the honor code specifically prohibits gambling!"

Hoshi scrunched up her face. "Actually, sir, I believe that the exact wording of the honor code says that gambling is not allowed when the cadets are on duty. However, once basic training is done, the cadets have the weekends off. So, technically, poker games on the weekends do not violate the honor code."

Archer groaned. "That is one hell of a technicality. You're very lucky that we need communications officers and that I was able to smooth things over with Admiral Forrest and Admiral Leonard. I've managed to arrange a compromise for you to remain in Starfleet on probation. However, we all feel that you need some closer supervision. Tomorrow morning, a shuttle is going to take you back to your mother's house in Kyoto. Starfleet has arranged for you to take your remaining coursework at home with a tutor."

"Oh no," groaned Hoshi. "No way! I'm not going back to my mother. You can send me anywhere else but there."

"This isn't open for debate, Hoshi," said Archer. "You're dismissed. Go back to the dormitory and pack your things." His tone softened a bit as he added, "You can stop by the apartment later to say good-bye to Porthos. I'm sure he'll miss you."

Hoshi said nothing, but she nodded before running out of the room. She went straight back to her dorm room, threw her belongings in a duffel bag, then pulled out her cell phone and called Portalocity for an emergency pick-up. Returning to Kyoto was not going to be an option.

[OOC: Hoshi will be returning to Fandom this weekend after paying someone a visit. NFB, NFI, OOC comments are love.]
