Powerless

Today I read of rape, murder, genocide
Shed a tear for the many whose bodies are found in the river
For the woman who’s daughter was mutilated
For the father who forcedly committed incest with his child

Today I felt what it is to be human
To be in a place safe and warm
Yet feeling the cold truth that our world lacks any sense of human dignity

Today I felt ashamed
For claiming to feel compassion
To care
When tomorrow I know I will wake and my first thought
Will be about my own happiness

Tommorrow, I will forget
I will hide the facts
Because the facts are a poison
A poison my body naturally rejects
To survive

Tommorrow, the president will speak
More women will die
More children will starve
More men will dream

Tommorrow
Like yesterday humanity will come closer to its own end
