[Background]
~Spoilers~
The story begins when Adachi is assigned to protect Mayumi Yamino from the paparazzi swarming outside of the Amagi Inn. Not believing his luck, he happily went along with it and met her up with her in her room. He proceeded to asking her questions about the break up, and when he had all his answers he told her of his feelings. She rejected him outright, and Adachi became enraged and began to force himself on her and tried to rape her. Yamino backed up against the TV and that was how Adachi discovered that not only could he put his hands into the TV, a whole human body could fit.
After Saki Konishi's discovery of Yamino's body, Adachi was left to question her and through his lines of questioning, he began to flirt with her heavily and attempted to seduce her, only to be met with a slap. Having been rejected once again, his anger rises and he forces her through the TV in the interrogation room of the police department in retaliation. He was pleased with his 'accomplishment', believing himself to be bringing justice to the world by removing the two 'gold-diggers'.
Meanwhile, Namatame had been watching the Midnight Channel, and when he was sure of what he'd found out, he rang the police department. Unfortunately, Adachi was the one to answer; he told Namatame that perhaps pushing the people appearing on the midnight channel into the TV might save them, so although Adachi didn't murder (or attempt to) the rest of the victims, he definitely instigated it all.
When Mistuo entered the police station claiming he'd murdered Mooroka, the police department became annoyed (believing it to be a prank), and sent Adachi to get rid of him. Adachi, fearing that his game would end too soon, calculated a way of trapping the student into the TV world to keep him quiet and keep his game afloat only for it to be ruined by the Investigation Team.
Although the Investigation Team effectively ruined his plans, Adachi didn't seem to mind. He mocked them every step of the way and when they finally caught up, he even gave them a golf clap in congratulation of their effort. He then confesses that his ultimate goal was to infest the real world with shadows and let them roam free (effectively killing everyone who couldn't fend for themselves). If the game is played through until the real ending, it's revealed that Adachi had come to the conclusion of being manipulated to act out the way he did, which turns out to be the truth-- but it doesn't change the fact that he murdered to people and attempted to rape one of them.
[Personality]
Adachi shows himself to be a complete goofball. As a newly appointed detective under his superior, Dojima, he often forgets his place and tends to let his mouth run much faster than his mind could keep up. He regularly let things slip about the current cases he and his boss are working on (generally top secret facts about various crime scenes and how the police's investigations were going). Adachi is very hard working, throwing himself into his work-- or at least, that's what he'd have people believe. He was usually skulking around Junes department store, buying his next meal or simply standing around staring into space.
Although Adachi seems to be a kind, spazzy detective, the truth is that there's much more hidden away that even he himself doesn't fully recognize. He has dark elements to himself that, on some level, he's aware of: for instance, he's aware he's cynical and jaded, and he's also aware of the corruption within the system and his hatred for it. Adachi truly believed he was doing the world a favor by killing both Yamino and Saki for flaunting themselves under the public eye. He also had no real qualms about rape, and although he relates to it as 'some sort of dream', it was still a reality and it takes someone with no inner conscience to actively attempt to rape someone.
Adachi has a terrible temper. When he's scorned, rejected or simply ignored for long enough, it can and will flare in a bad way-- especially because he suppresses it. Being the police department's local doormat (or slave, as he 'jokingly' says in passing about Dojima) was bound to have some effect on both his self esteem and the ticking time bomb in his head. He's prone to violence, rape, and whats more, he won't feel any remorse for it unless it hurts someone he actually might care about. It's suggested in the game that he may have felt remorse thanks to the kindness Dojima showed him, despite everything he'd done. That was the passing thought that stuck with him and caused him to turn himself into the police and confess everything.
He was fully aware that when his game ended, he would be killed. He wasn't afraid of death, perhaps even welcoming it when he believed he had no choice, but when given the choice he obviously preferred to live. It wouldn't be going too far to say that he appreciated the choice and found the Investigation Team's actions almost heart warming. Though having said that, the ticking time bomb in his head is still there. Although he's been humbled by a few individuals actions, it doesn't mean he isn't prone to acting out again, and he probably will when pushed too far or rejected.
[Abilities]
Adachi is much smarter than he lets on. He uses his 'goofy' attitude to give people a false sense of security to gain others trust and remain under their radar.
He has the ability to move in and out of the TV world-- which means he can both push people into the TV and move into the world himself. He's also good with a gun. He also has a persona, which means not only has he confronted and accepted his inner self, he's decided to listen and fall victim to his darker thoughts.
[Other important stuff]
He became a detective so that he could carry a gun-- not, like most people, to better the world or even make it a safer place.
He's attempted rape.
Anger management might do him some good. Or a lot of good. But he'd never admit he needs it.
[Sample post]
The last thing he remembered was being behind bars; but now, he stood in a clearing of a busy city. The streets were bustling with strange people from strange places, and the light of the sun caused him to squint. He slowly spun on the spot, mindlessly searching the sea of faces for someone he might know, but instead feeling the familiar feeling of being quiet alone. Finishing his scan of the area, he looked down at himself and noticed for the first time that his hands weren't cuffed and his clothes were as they always were; a deep blue-almost black suit with a red tie and his-- was that his gun?
The fact that he was still armed caused him to smile; there was something about having a gun with you no matter where you went that made you feel... invincible. Even as he found himself in a strange, new place, he wasn't worried. He'd done something like this before, hadn't he?
As he felt around in his pockets he found a lighter, a single cigarette and... a strange phone that resembled one of the newer models out in Inaba. He pulled it out and pressed a button or two before bringing it up to his face and examining it further. It was better than the phone he had back at... well, home (not that he'd seen it as of late). The phone soon lost his interest, however, when he contemplated everything he'd just discovered. His smile returned as he breathed in the fresh air and then let it out again.
It was as if... nothing had ever happened.
