College football, from a foreigner's perspective

I found this whilst perusing the BBC website. It's an editorial, of sorts, trying to explain the whole concept of college football rivalries and huge attendance, to British people, from the perspective of a British person. I find this fascinating, and it really does make it all look really ridiculous.

Just imagine if you and I invented football today, and tried selling it to colleges... "you need all kinds of expensive uniforms and pads and all sorts of training machines, a field that is insanely expensive to upkeep, a whole lot of extra coaches and trainers, and at some point or another, just about every single one of the players will have at least a minor injury...." You think they would still go for it?
