So, it's been quite a week for me. Memorable, to say the least. It all started with my car accident on Sunday night. I'm fine, thank God. But it really shook me up. My car is drivable but it is definitely showing some damage behind the gas tank in the back, and the other car had two headlights knocked out. The other driver was this sweet man that lived only 5 houses down the road from where we had the accident. Right now, the whole thing is a mess and the two insurance companies are working it out. I ended up with a traffic ticket for failure to yield to a stop sign, which I feel is wrong because I did stop and look both ways. I know that I did. Anyways, now I have to talk to a lawyer about whether I'm going to plead guilty or not guilty to the ticket. We'll see I have another week and a half to figure it out.
Then on Monday, I had my first class for J-term. I'm student teaching at a local school this J-term, and I recieved all my information, including my supervising teacher's name, on Monday. The whole class had to go to get fingerprinted also. That was an experience. For fifteen people to get done took almost 3 hours, so it was a long wait. Of course, I helped prolong the time since they do fingerprinting using a scanner now, not just black ink, and my fingers refused to scan well and match each other. I guess I'm just abnormal, with my low blood pressure, slow heart rate, low body temperature, and constantly changing fingerprints. *smirk*
Then on Tuesday, I spent my first day at Springbrook, Upstate Homes for Children and Adults. It's a school for disabled children and adolescents, with residential facilities located on campus. I am working in one of the classes that has students that are functioning on the highest levels. They range between 15 and 21 years old. Typically there are 8 students in the class and 4 professional staff, and I am an intern for a month.
I've only been in the classroom for four days, but I already feel really comfortable there. I know the students and work with them on an individual or group basis. I run the morning activity with them and then assist the teachers for the rest of the day. It's a busy and challenging day, with each student having a different schedule and different needs. But I love it! There are all great kids. Each of them is really special and smart in their own ways. I was told to expect extremely low ability levels, so I came in with no expectations. But these kids amaze me everyday with their skills. Already, one week is over and I've seen students have behaviors and worked through issues that have come up with them. I've already become part of the classroom. I'm really looking forward to the next three weeks and the new situations that come up. Although, I've got to do something about my energy level, because each day I come back to my room and crash. These kids just demand so much, that it's all I can do to get back up and go to dinner.
And that was my past week. I hope that this next week goes a bit better. At the very least, I should know what I'm going to do about my traffic ticket...
