Nyota stared at the world coming closer in her viewscreen. Four days and now...her secret passion, so close. The radio frequencies were so promising. IT seemed far more primiative than it ought to be, but there were people down there, speaking a variant of Basic. Shouldn't take too long to pick it up ( Read more... )

"I leave it in your capable hands, Captain," he smirked, looking up from his journal.

"How long ago did those ships go missing?" he asked. It would take more than a few centuries for them to regress this much, he'd thought, unless there were other forces at work.

"Very beginning of Earth's colonization efforts," Nyota responded with a little eyeroll at calling her Captain. "I was thinking we'd try to land without notice. According to all the records we have of the ships, they were a blending of genetics, so so long as nothing outre has happened, we should both fit in."

"So, a hundred years," he answered. "They've been gone a hundred years- if that's them." He tried to envision being stranded without resources, without the technology to tell someone what happened. "They'd have to go back to the Stone Age, as far as technology goes," he pointed out. "Making their own tools, having to grow food, probably a hunter/gatherer society at first. But their language shouldn't have changed that much." He refused to believe that part of this.

"Either bands or tribes," Nyota nodded. "We could be generous and put them at bronze or even iron age, but modern would be impossible. The sensors aren't reading enough resources for the more advanced metals." She'd learned to read those sensors from Spock and was very grateful that he'd been patient while tutoring her in basic sensor reading on nearly every console of the ship. "Not enough radio contact either. Maybe the chieftains retained something akin to primitive walkie-talkies and AM radio but..."

"But they'd need power to keep those going. No batteries, no way of keeping the radios charged..." Liam shook his head. "We can assume three generations have passed since the original colonists, enough time for them to still recall their homeland, but they'll have probably created a new form of government, something small like you said."

"So, what exactly do we do, once we determine its the lost colony?" he wondered. "Offer them a ride home? Give them a transporter so they can join the twenty second century?"

"Evaluate their character, same as we do for any potential member of the Federation," Nyota responded. "If they haven't descended to savagery, then report back from there."

"Sounds good," he told her. "Have you decided where you want to land?"

"I'm thinking that clearing there." Nyota pointed to a spot on the map. "But you're the one who's taking us down so you'd better make sure you can get there."

"Will do, Captain ma'am," he smirked. Settling into the pilot's chair, he took control of the shuttle, breaking through the atmosphere and landing in the clearing she located.

"Should I ask you to punch it, if I'm captain?" Nyota teased right back. "Do you have your weapons?" She'd taken the time to sharpen her glaive on the long trip, and get in a few pattern dances in while doing so.

"Got it," he touched his sidearm lovingly. It had gotten him out of more scrapes than he cared to admit.

The shuttle door opened, and he stepped outside first, one hand on his phaser, already set to stun. "Looks clear."

Nyota shook her head at him. If they were primative, it wouldn't do to let them get ahold of the phaser, so she was going with her glaive. "Ready when you are." She was willing to defer to him on cover and such tactics, while she would take the lead on actual diplomatic relationships.

They would take his phaser from his cold, dead hands. It was always the same with these desk jockey intelligence agents. They'd learn soon enough, he knew from experience. "After you," he said, knowing she had a better grasp of the terrain than he did.

"You sure?" She was mostly relying on the survival course that all intelligence officers had to take. She nodded to herself going over her mental checklist. Now if nothing went wrong....

They surrounded the queer creation that landed from the skies. The Lords had decreed it to be taken, anything that came out was to be taken prisoner. they circled the silver thing, waiting int he woods, holding their breaths waiting to see if anything happened. They had been told folks would come out.

Liam looked down at their sensors. "Shite," he murmured under his breath. "So much for sneaking in undetected. We've got life signs outside."

A glance at her. "How do you want to handle this?" he asked. "I recommend we just go meet them, since we're not a secret anymore." Meet them, and keep his weapon set to 'stun'.
