Chewing on a stylus didn't have the same...something about it that chewing a pen cap did, Nyota noticed, not for the first time. How to leave a message...who to leave one for was the question and the stylus chewing didn't answer for her. Of course she'd leave one for Leo and Jim...but should she leave one with Spock too? They hadn't talked beyond amicable exchanges during staff meetings. But she was going on a secret mission, was it the done thing to leave a message just in case? She wasn't sure.
Leo's was easy. Just a quick note stating she was going off for a surprise conference for linguists where she'd suddenly gotten taken off the waiting list to attend.Luckily there was one not far off she'd put herself on the waiting list for. She didn't figure Jim would hack the guest list to find out where she was really. that would be paranoid, even for Jim.
Jim's was a bit harder, as she had to mix professionalism and affection, letting him know who was in charge in her absense that she would be back, that she cared for him.
In the end she decided against notifying Spock where she was headed. After all, as he'd chosen his path, she couldn't keep hanging around waiting for him to choose anew. Maybe they'd sort things out when she got back. Maybe not. Who knew?
She brushed her hand superstitiously over Enterprise's bulkheads as she got onto the supply ship that would take her to the Starbase where she'd meet her intelligence partner for the mission. She wondered if she'd met him or her before, how they'd work together.
