I really loved this movie, but then again I'm one of those who think gore makes a horror movie. I guess I think gore can be it's own type of art, in horror movies anyway (I mean it's hard to do stuff like that and have it be believable and "scary")
I just feel like horror movies these days are reaching to gross us out and shock us.... I'm of the opinion, what scares me is what's going on in my own imagination WAY more. Like Blair Witch, or Dead End. Neither has gore, or even any monsters... both use the actors reaction to what's happening to freak you out... I'm all about less is more.
But when it comes to the Rob Zombie movies, it's not even the gore that bother's me... it's like he's trying to think up the most possible fucked up thing that could EVER happen and put it in his movie... which is disturbing, but not scary, because to me, scary is thinking it might actually happen to me... and with his movies, I'm fairly certain none of that is ever going to happen.
I never see scary movies to be scared, I see them to be freaked/grossed out (I don't think I've ever actually been "scared" during a horror movie. I see them as more of an outlet of what totally freaky/creepy/weird things I can't see in everyday life. At most a movie has grossed me out, but I've never been scared. Maybe that's why I like those gory movies, since I get some emotion out of them I don't normally get.
But I do also like classic horror for what it is -- creepy, and not always bloody/gross. I guess I am what one would call a "horror fan" since I can see anything from gore comedy, or bad B-horror and like it for what it is. I do agree on the monster thing (LAME AND FAR-FETCHED, I HATE MONSTERS)
You gotta admit it's pretty hard to actually scare people nowadays. And hey aren't you writing a horror movie? Good luck trying to scare people, for me that would be hardest part! haha
