And high up above earth or down below // When you're too in love to let it go // But if you never try you'll never know // Just what you're worth // Lights will guide you home // And ignite your bones // And I will try to fix you -- Fix You - Coldplay
When he walks into the hotel room, she can see it. Maybe he’s trying to hide it from her but she can still read the murderous intent there, especially when he takes in the broken pieces of furniture and the knives that had gone flying at one point. Once he’s sure that their room is in one piece, he moves to check her over and she instantly pulls back. Any speck of blood, even if there is no wound left behind, is going to drive him nuts and she doesn’t want that.
“Let me see.” He bites out the words carefully, trying not to sound too angry with her but she flinches nonetheless.
“It’s nothing, Galen.” She shakes her head, trying to put him off.
“Good, then you can show me.” He holds out his hand, trying to hold onto the last bit of patience that he has.
It’s enough to make her worry though. The innocence between them is gone after all. The honeymoon phase has passed; the phase where you believe there is no fault in the other person and you truly believe that there is nothing in the world that can cause you any kind of heart ache. They know better now though. She can see the darkness inside of him, just as he can see it in her. She worries about him more though, all because he’s already fallen once more. He had embraced the dark side before and now he’s struggling to fight his way back, and she keeps threatening all his hard work with her drama.
He worries about her because sometimes those who have never really fallen before fall harder.
Still, now isn’t the time to argue as she turns a bit so that he can see where she had been hurt for all of two-point-five seconds. She’s healed by now of course but that doesn’t make him feel any better. He feels like he has failed her by not being there to protect her. She wants to tell him that she’s relieved he wasn’t there though, all because he would have gotten hurt if he had been there. He would tell her that she needed to have more faith in him and his abilities but she knew it wasn’t that. She had more than enough faith in him but she knew what Sylar could be like too, and she couldn’t imagine losing Galen.
Watching the anger as it runs across his features, she’s quick to reach out to him. She needs to remind herself that he’s still there and she knows he needs the physical reassurance as much as she does. So she wraps her arms around him, curling a hand against the back of his neck as he drops his forehead against her shoulder while releasing a pent up breath that he didn’t know he had been holding in till right then.
“I’m okay.” She murmurs, threading her fingers through his hair.
“While hearing that makes me happy, it doesn’t make me want to kill him any less.” He points out, clutching at her back to hold her closer to him.
“I know.” She tries not to sound so defeated at the idea that he’s going to throw himself into the battle to protect her. She still doesn’t get why people try to protect the indestructible girl but she knows that she won’t be sending him away. She’s done that once before but that time was different. West had been a great guy, so had Alex, but neither one of them had been Galen. She hadn’t loved either one of them like she loves Galen.
“I’m sorry.” She murmurs after a moment of comforting silence.
“For what?” He sighs, trying not to look confused.
“For dragging you into this.” For threatening your good side. She doesn’t say the rest of the statement but it’s hanging there between them as he pulls back to look at her.
“There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.” He reminds her and she lets herself believe him as she gives a relieved little smile. She knows that means a lot, especially compared to his love for the stars. She just hopes she can continue giving him enough reasons to stay with her.
“I know.” She nods her head, smiling still as he brushes some of the hair back from her face. “You know I should tell you to find somewhere else to stay till this settles, right?”
“Yes, just like you know that I won’t go.” He gives her a crooked little smile before kissing the tip of her nose.
“Yeah, I know.” She nods before fixing him with a look. “But if anything happens to you...”
“I know.” He nods before cupping the side of her face. “But nothing will happen, to either one of us.”
“I guess that means I’m never going to be left alone again, huh?”
“You guessed right.” He glances over the mess before eying her again. “Where is Orion?”
“He’s under the bed but I can’t get him to come out. I think he’ll listen to you though.” She looks towards the bed.
“I’ll get him.” Galen nods, disengaging himself from her long enough to get their cat out.
As he moves to his knees and starts peering under the bed, Claire hopes once more that she can keep him from going to a dark place again. She knows she’s a threat to all the good that he’s doing at the moment but she’s also hoping that maybe, just maybe, she’s enough to bring him back as well.
