5. "Making the decision to have a child - it's momentous. It is to decide to forever have your heart go walking around outside your body." - Elizabeth Stone
The first time she saw Phoebe, she knew that she was lost. That didn’t mean she didn’t have all the doubts that had been plaguing her since the talk with Hiro about possibly bringing the little girl home with them but now she wasn’t so sure they even mattered.
It wasn’t like she was unaware of the fact that others wouldn’t agree with their plan but it was just another one of those things they couldn’t help. It wasn’t about the others after all. It was about the young girl with caramel colored hair and bright eyes. Right now she was laughing as she raced across the yard, chasing some small boy, but there was something about her that struck a deep chord inside of Claire. There had been a sense of familiarity.
There was even a moment, just a quick passing of acknowledgment, when the girl stopped in her game and looked curiously at the young blonde standing at the edge of the yard. For a moment the laughter seemed to die and Claire could see the shadows that echoed a little deeper than most people cared to look. Not scary shadows but there was a hint of sadness, probably something Molly had seen as well which had brought up the question of whether she could adopt Phoebe or not.
As Hiro stood nearby talking to one of the women who ran the orphanage, Claire managed a trembling smile at the little girl as she lifted her hand to wave in greeting. For a second or two, Phoebe merely watched but then all stoicism faded as a brilliant smile lit up her young features and she waved rather excitedly at being greeted by an adult. Just that brief moment of joy and connection before the young boy tagged her, pulling her attention away before she laughed and gave chase again.
Claire bit her lip quietly as she looked down, looking at the ring that had only been on her finger for a few months. She knew the others would say it was too soon, that they were too young to be seriously considering adopting a child but it didn’t matter anymore because in that brief moment where they had traded a smile and a wave, Claire knew without a doubt that this was the right thing to do.
Looking up, she smiled as she watched as the little girl ran away with a small piece of her heart.
