1. "There's definitely a dangerous feeling when you're in love…it's giving your heart to someone else and knowing that they have control over your feelings. I know for me, who always tries to be so tough, that's the dangerous thing." -- Beyonce Knowles
“We need to talk.” Claire announced as she casually walked into her father’s hotel room, slipping the key card he had given her into her back pocket.
“Do we really?” Noah Bennet turned to face his daughter, not really surprised to see her. He held a bowl of cereal in his hands as he leaned back against the counter in his kitchen area, watching her. “What do we need to talk about?” He asked before taking a bite.
“Galen.” She stopped just a couple feet away from him, her shoulders pushed back and her spine ramrod straight. It was pretty much the stance she took whenever she felt like she was bracing for a fight. It was clear she was taking this rather seriously and she wasn’t going to back down from whatever she was going to try convincing him to do.
At the mention of her boyfriend, he made a non-committal noise as though he didn’t quite know what she was talking about. He was good at looking somewhat innocent though she didn’t quite believe him. “What do you mean?”
“You need to give him a chance.” The demand was given with a thrust of her chin.
“I wasn’t aware that I wasn’t giving him one.” He commented before taking a bite of his cereal.
He was fixed with an annoyed look then. “You know exactly what I mean, dad.” Her hands moved to her hips as she cocked them to the side. “I want you to give him a real, honest chance. No trying to scare him off.”
“Have I ever done anything like that?” His eyebrows rose up towards his hairline but the look he got from her said the innocent look wasn’t working at all.
“Dad, please. You did once ‘bag and tag’ one of my ex-boyfriends.”
“In my defense, that was before the two of you dated and I don’t do that anymore.” He chuckled, amused as he turned to place the empty bowl in the sink.
“That’s not the point! You have a way, okay? You do this look and you make people uncomfortable.” Claire sighed, using her hands to flail in frustration just a bit. “I just want you to give him a real chance. He thinks you don’t like him.”
Noah tilted his head, seeming to consider her statement. “Why did he get that idea?”
“He just had that feeling when you sent out a village wide message asking who I was living with.” She fixed him with another look, translating just how much that had displeased her. It had been somewhat embarrassing to learn about afterwards.
“Hmm.” Well, he wasn’t surprised she had found out about that but he was more interested in hearing that Galen thought he hated him now.
“Dad.” Claire decided to try a different approach now, her voice growing soft while she stepped closer to him. The look she was giving him now was her ‘puppy eyes look’ and it was hard to ignore as he felt something in his chest twist a bit. “It’s very important to me. He’s very important to me.” She drew in a slight breath before pushing the air out in a rush. “I love him.”
For a moment, he forgot about the look as it looked like she had just punched him in the stomach. It certainly felt like she had because suddenly he was breathless as he stared at her. “You’re...”
“I’m in love, yes.” She bit her bottom lip.
“Wow.” He let out a deep breath as his shoulders sagged a bit. His baby girl was in love.
“What?” She blinked at him a little bit. “You didn’t think I was? I’m living with him.” She pointed out.
“Well, I was kind of hoping that maybe it wasn’t serious?” He lifted his brows again but this time it was more of a hopeful expression. Of course he knew it was a foolish hope.
“Wait, you thought I was just living with him just because?” She looked so confused because how could that be better than her being in love with Galen?
“Yes?” He knew it sounded stupid to her too but that would have been easier for him to handle.
“So you thought I was one of those girls?” She was crossing her arms now, clearly unimpressed.
“No, not at all.” He shook his head, moving forward to take her shoulders into his hands. “I just wasn’t prepared for you to be in love, Claire. No father actually wants to hear that from his little girl.”
“But he’d rather heart that I’m just living with a guy for fun?”
“Well, no.” Damnit, she had caught him there. “I’m not saying that at all. I’m...” He sighed, lifting a hand to smooth over her hair. “It just means you’re growing up.”
“Thank God. It’d be disturbing if I wasn’t.” She almost smirked, tilting her head as she wrapped her arms around his waist. “Dad, we’ve been over this before. No matter how grown up I get, I’ll still be your little girl.”
“I know and I wish I could believe that.” He murmured, leaning to kiss her forehead before he sighed. “So this really is serious, huh?”
“More serious than any relationship I’ve ever been in before.” She nodded her head, hoping it would stay that way.
“If it helps, I don’t think I could actually scare him off.” That didn’t really help the sting to his ego but he knew it would be comforting for her to hear.
“You’re probably right but it would still be nice if you gave him a chance.” She smiled sweetly at him, knowing she had her dad right where she wanted him. “Get to know him, try to be friends or at least try to be civilized.”
“I can do that.” He didn’t clarify which part. “Just promise me one thing.”
“Anything.”
“You’re being safe, right?” He wasn’t sure he could handle it if she got pregnant any time soon.
“Dad.” She rolled her eyes, swatting at his shoulders but he noted how she didn’t really assure him of anything.
Maybe he would have to ask Galen when he finally met him face to face.
“I’ll want to meet him just the two of us.”
“Why?” The look was wary.
“Claire, if you want me to get to know him and to give him a chance, you’ve got to let me do it my own way.” He gave her a charming smile.
Her eyes narrowed suspiciously as she studied his features, searching for anything that should make her worry but then she sighed. “Fine but I’m serious, be nice.”
“Aren’t I always?”
Claire gave him another look before hugging him tightly, nibbling over her bottom lip. She would have to make sure he didn’t have a taser or anything. That or tell Galen not to use the full force of his Force Lightning if he was tempted. She didn’t relish the idea of not being there when they met but she would have to trust them both.
