themuseswithin lyrics prompt [how to save a life; the fray]

4. Let him know that you know best  //  Cause after all you do know best  //  Try to slip past his defense  //  Without granting innocence  //  Lay down a list of what is wrong  //  The things you've told him all along  //  And pray to God he hears you  //  Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend  //  Somewhere along in the bitterness  //  And I would have stayed up with you all night  //  Had I known how to save a life

It felt weird to walk into the townhouse that had been her home for a year.  It felt strange because Adam wasn’t there.  The walls that had once held so much laughter and light now felt cold and dull to her.  There was no lingering warmth from the man - men - who normally lived there.  He hadn’t been gone for very long but it felt like forever....or at least a few long years.

Yes, she had been wrapped up in her wedding and her honeymoon but that didn’t mean she didn’t notice the absence of her grandfather.    She noticed before and now it was even more painfully noticeable because his birthday was only a couple days away.  It should have been a happy time of planning something for him but there was no way of knowing whether he would come back or not.

“No.”  She murmured, frowning.  “He’ll come back.”  She told the townhouse as though she were trying to reassure the emptiness that the man would indeed come back.  It wasn’t a matter of “if”, it was a matter of “when.”   He would come back but she couldn’t let the house be dirty when he did.

So she walked through the townhouse opening all the windows so that cold breeze could wash through each room and chase out any hint of mustiness that might have started to linger.  She left the curtains open as well, letting them flutter in the wind as she walked over and turned on the stereo that had been silent for too long.  It was funny because she had been expecting something other than Coldplay to start playing but she didn’t complain as she turned the music up before setting to work.

The cleaners were in the last place she had left them before moving out and she quickly moved them all to the counter as she picked out what she would need.  Just some light dusting and cleaning the floors, then he wouldn’t have to come back a fine layer of dust bunnies covering his place.  Of course she would have to come back every two weeks till he came back just to make sure it was cleaned but she would.  It didn’t feel right to let the place get cold and dirty without him there.

As she wandered through the different rooms, she could recall different memories of her time there.  Decorating for Christmas with him, the night his cat scared the shit out of her and brought him running out of his room in his boxers with a sword in his hand.  Long nights of sitting on the couch and talking about different things in his past or lessons he wanted her to learn.  There were even simple memories just like the many days where he would try to sneak some kind of baked good away from her when she was in the middle of making them a batch of something.  So many memories and now he was gone somewhere.  In Michigan.  He was there, not talking to any of them and they didn’t have any idea why.  At least they hadn’t known before but she could hope Sylar and Peter knew now as they had gone after Adam to hopefully bring him home.  It left her feeling strangely guilty as she finished her tasks that she had assigned to herself, mainly because she was there and not in Michigan with the rest.

Once she put the cleaners away, she walked over to the bag that she had brought with her that was filled with presents for his birthday.  She didn’t know when he would come back to see them but she would leave them on the table along with an ice cream cake in the freezer.  She could always make him something later.  As she let herself out of the townhouse, she told herself she felt somewhat better about not doing something before but she knew she wouldn’t feel completely alright till he came back.

She could only hope it was soon.
