6. "There is nothing like a newborn baby to renew your spirit - and to buttress your resolve to make the world a better place." - Virginia Kelley
“She’s fucking perfect.”
“Of course she is.” Claire rolled her eyes up at her husband before looking down at the tiny bundle in her arms. Bringing her fingers up, she brushed her fingers over the perfect velvet of her daughter’s cheek before tucking the pink blankets around her a little more. “What did you expect?”
“I expected perfect. She looks like you after all.”
“Really? I think she’s got your nose.” She chuckled softly because all babies’ noses looked the same to her but she was hoping their daughter would have some of his looks or at least some of his coloring.
“Let’s hope not.” Cain grumbled softly before ducking his head to press a kiss to the baby’s forehead before turning his head to steal a kiss from his wife. As he pulled back, he eyed her closely. “You sure you feel alright?”
“I feel perfect.” Claire admitted with a chuckle though she could understand why he asked.
After nearly twenty six hours of labour, and coming close to breaking Cain’s hands numerous times, Claire had been relieved when she pushed their daughter out with a final ragged cry. She would have never admitted it before but the pain had been almost too much, mainly because she wasn’t used to it. Because her ability always took the sharp pain away in a few seconds, she never learned how to cope and so when she was faced with hours of never ending, continuous pain, she wasn’t prepared for it. It didn’t help that in a cruel twist of fate, her ability couldn’t chase off the continuous pain but it would still make any pain killers completely useless as it cleaned it all out her system a little too quickly for her taste.
But now none of it mattered as she held their little girl in her arms.
Looking over the baby they had named Felicity Cassandra Callahan, she felt the age old urge to protect the little girl. It was a mother’s instinct to protect her own, no matter what it took and she knew she had that determination in her now.
They had talked about before after all; the threat that someone might come after her and their baby once they realized she had had a child. Her father had been put in that position before and she knew there were people out there who would be interested in any child born from an immortal such as her but whoever came after them was in for a rude awakening.
With the two of them as parents, Felicity couldn’t be anywhere safer, because as Cain and Claire watched her sleep, they both knew exactly what they would do to protect her.
