could this be any more awkward? [rp fro swipeacadavar and hornrimmed]

To say things were a little awkward was putting it mildly but she was trying, as had been her dad's advice.

She still wasn't sure what to think about Gretchen and her crush but it helped to put her mind at ease to know that Gretchen wasn't stalking her because she had some kind of nefarious plan to hurt Claire.  Not that she could be hurt but that ( Read more... )

Gretchen bounced lightly on the balls of her feet. "Are you sure he won't mind?" she asked. She was a little nervous about just walking into someone else's apartment, but it wasn't enough to interfere with the glow of just hanging out with Claire.

Bennet got up from the computer and went out of the bedroom when he heard Claire's voice. "Claire-bear," he said warmly. He glanced behind her. "And Gretchen. It's nice to see you again," he said levelly.

Claire really tried not to hesitate, honestly! "...No, he won't mind. He'll be happy to have some real food around." She nodded, flashing a smile as she kicked the door closed after Gretchen walked in.

Then she turned around, smiling brightly at the sight of her dad. "Hey, Daddy." She moved to hug him but not before giving him a look that told him to play nice. After hugging him, she glanced over her shoulder with a smile at Gretchen before looking at her dad again. "We've come to take over your kitchen."

"Okay," she said uncertainly, then smiled as Claire's father came in. "Hi, Mr. Bennet," she said.

He hugged his daughter then looked down at her with a slightly quirked eyebrow. "I'm sure my kitchen will enjoy that," he said. He leaned down and murmured in Claire's ear. "Did you want me to make myself scarce, or would you like some company?"

"Uh, Gretchen, can you take the bags over there?" Claire pointed at the counter, forcing a smile.

Then she turned back to her dad with a low hiss. "Don't be obvious, how about that?" She whispered, rolling her eyes. "Just...hang." Because if Bennet just hid in his room, it'd be obvious.

"Sure, no problem," she said. She flashed Mr. Bennet a quick smile before lugging the supplies over where Claire had indicated.

Bennet's expression was subtly amused. "Just trying to help, sweetheart," he said. "How's school going?" he asked a little more loudly, picking a book up from the coffee table where it rested beside his battery-operated tribble, which purred when he moved close to it. He had to stroke it once on principle before he settled on the couch.

"Uh huh." She shook her head as they started to the kitchen and she shrugged. "It's not too bad. I've been....what is that?" She blinked at the tribble then, lifting her brows.

"It's a tribble," Bennet said dryly, raising an eyebrow. "It gives me love," he added with a straight face.

Gretchen got all the things out of the bag, arranging them neatly on the counter. "Claire?" she called.

Claire arched a brow at him before shaking his head. "You need a pet or something." She scoffed, turning around then to head over to Gretchen.

"Yes?" She smiled, glancing over the items.

Bennet chuckled. "It was a gift, Claire."

"What should we do first?" she asked, trying not to look nervous or excited, both of which she was feeling and either of which would be weird and she didn't want to freak out Claire or, God, her dad. She rubbed her hands on her skirt.

"From who?" She chuckled.

"Well, we need to find the bowls and stuff. ...If he has any?" Now she eyed her father's cupboards, wondering if he would even have the stuff they would need.

"Peter," he said, not betraying any emotion. "And check in the cabinet by the sink. I should have some bowls in there."

Gretchen reached up and opened the cabinet, pulling down a couple bowls she hoped would be large enough.

"Peter?" She blinked a little at him. "You guys are hanging out?"

She glanced over at Gretchen. "Those will work." She smiled, starting to show her what ingredients they needed as they set to do some baking.

"Some, yes. We were talking about asteroids and astronaut ice cream, like you do, and he apparently decided I needed a tribble."

She smiled at Claire and hurried to follow her instructions, wanting to impress her and be helpful.

"Huh." It surprised her a bit to hear that he was hanging out with Peter.

Claire smiled a little as she was a bit impressed, or at least she found it somewhat cute. As they started the batter going, she moved to find a cookie sheet.

Bennet was more than happy to let the subject drop, and settled on the couch with his book to surreptitiously watch the two girls.

Gretchen stirred carefully; cooking was just applied chemistry, so it couldn't be too hard, right? "How's this look?" she asked.

"Looks good." Claire smiled brightly as she leaned over to look in the bowl and then she glanced up at Gretchen. "Good job, we might make a baker out of you yet." She chuckled, sliding the cookie sheet over.

It was almost easy to forget her dad was there watching the two of them.
