Bennet got up from the computer and went out of the bedroom when he heard Claire's voice. "Claire-bear," he said warmly. He glanced behind her. "And Gretchen. It's nice to see you again," he said levelly.

Then she turned around, smiling brightly at the sight of her dad. "Hey, Daddy." She moved to hug him but not before giving him a look that told him to play nice. After hugging him, she glanced over her shoulder with a smile at Gretchen before looking at her dad again. "We've come to take over your kitchen."

He hugged his daughter then looked down at her with a slightly quirked eyebrow. "I'm sure my kitchen will enjoy that," he said. He leaned down and murmured in Claire's ear. "Did you want me to make myself scarce, or would you like some company?"

Then she turned back to her dad with a low hiss. "Don't be obvious, how about that?" She whispered, rolling her eyes. "Just...hang." Because if Bennet just hid in his room, it'd be obvious.

Bennet's expression was subtly amused. "Just trying to help, sweetheart," he said. "How's school going?" he asked a little more loudly, picking a book up from the coffee table where it rested beside his battery-operated tribble, which purred when he moved close to it. He had to stroke it once on principle before he settled on the couch.

Gretchen got all the things out of the bag, arranging them neatly on the counter. "Claire?" she called.

"Yes?" She smiled, glancing over the items.

"What should we do first?" she asked, trying not to look nervous or excited, both of which she was feeling and either of which would be weird and she didn't want to freak out Claire or, God, her dad. She rubbed her hands on her skirt.

"Well, we need to find the bowls and stuff. ...If he has any?" Now she eyed her father's cupboards, wondering if he would even have the stuff they would need.

Gretchen reached up and opened the cabinet, pulling down a couple bowls she hoped would be large enough.

She glanced over at Gretchen. "Those will work." She smiled, starting to show her what ingredients they needed as they set to do some baking.

She smiled at Claire and hurried to follow her instructions, wanting to impress her and be helpful.

Claire smiled a little as she was a bit impressed, or at least she found it somewhat cute. As they started the batter going, she moved to find a cookie sheet.

Gretchen stirred carefully; cooking was just applied chemistry, so it couldn't be too hard, right? "How's this look?" she asked.
