8. "My weakness was skinned over by your love. I knew when you healed me that the wound would open again, I knew it like destiny, and at the same time, I knew it as choice." -Jeanette Winterson

“Are you ready to go?”

Claire looked up from where she was standing in front of the sink in a small dingy bathroom in a small dingy hotel. They weren’t staying there, of course; he had only wanted to stop there so that she could get cleaned up and have time to change from a hospital gown into a pair of clothes he had bought for her before coming to her rescue. Looking at him in the mirror, she felt her heart give a vicious tug as she watched him arch a brow at her with a somewhat interested smile. Of course the interest probably had something to do with the fact that she was standing there in a pair of jeans and a lacy bra that was the color of mocha.

“Almost.” She dropped her eyes to the sink as she focused on applying some toothpaste to the brush he had brought for her too. As she ran the brush under the water, she heard him move closer and she wasn’t surprised when his hands slid over her hips as she stuck the toothbrush into her mouth.

It was a strange moment and yet oddly tender as he pressed a kiss to the side of her neck while she started to brush her teeth. Tilting her head, she allowed him a little more access as she closed her eyes for a moment and felt the strong urge to cry at how right it felt. She was aware of the familiar tingle that shot down her spine as his facial hair brushed against her skin and she could easily recall the heat that he caused as he kissed his way to the spot behind her ear. She could sense what he was trying to say without putting it in words.

‘I missed you.’

The sentiment was traded between them as she turned around slowly to look at him, her fingers lifting to brush against his cheek. He was about to kiss her but she stopped him in his tracks. “I think you should leave me behind.”

It took him a moment to realize what she was saying. Confusion was sharp on his features as his brows drew together, creating a shadow over his eyes as he pulled back ever so slightly to look down at her. “What?” He frowned.

“I think you should leave me behind.” She murmured even as her fingers curled around his biceps.

“Why the hell would I do that?” His tone was sharp though it was still soft.

“Because I’m a danger to you, that’s why.” When the abrupt laugh came out of him, she gave him a look to shush him before she continued. “Ever since I’ve been with you, we’ve been hunted and captured a couple of times. If not captured, then our powers have been stripped.”

“I got them back.” He made the frivolous remark like she had nothing to worry about and she frowned. It hadn’t been as easy as he made it sound as they had been separated and she had nearly died. Permanently.

“Yes, but what about next time?”

“There won’t be a next time.”

“But there could be.” She tried to argue with him, irritated he wasn’t seeing the seriousness in the situation. “They could try it again and this time they will know you’ll come for the cure. Next time they might find something a little more permanent.”

“So you want me to leave you behind because you think I’ll be safer? You think they’ll stop coming after me? Or you?” Sylar shook his head, incredulous. “You can’t protect yourself, Claire.”

“Hey! I can protect myself.”

The look he gave her was basically “Oh really?” and she waited for him to toss her into a wall just to prove it to her but he didn’t. Instead he sighed, lifting a hand to thread his fingers through her hair. “Claire, I’m not leaving you.”

“If you don’t walk away now, Sylar, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to.” Her voice was soft, almost forlorn, as she started to lean into him. His fingers curled around the base of her skull as she pressed her cheek to his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. God, how she had missed that sound.

“I don’t want you to, Claire. I didn’t go through all of this to lose you.” His fingers started to tighten in her hair as he held her a bit tighter. “You’re mine.”

She knew the best thing for them both was to push him away and send him off without her. She would continue to destroy him if they stayed together. She wondered if he really believed they were better together when all she did was bring his enemies closer to him all the time. She had gotten him caught a couple times, got his powers taken away and even now he was still fighting to keep her at his side.

Tilting her head back, she looked up at him as she tried to decide the next step in her life. If she were in fact a better person, she would end it now but she knew she wasn’t a better person. She was weak, especially when it came to him. The indestructible girl had been shattered by his love and she knew she wouldn’t stand very well on her own. Oh, she would do it if she had to but why would she want to?

“Fine, I’ll stay.” She murmured it like he didn’t know it already.

The look on his face was decidedly smug as he bent his head down to capture her mouth with his own and she let herself be swept away by his kiss once more. They had made their choice and she knew she would go wherever he wanted to go.
