[-Claire is never adopted by Noah Bennet. Instead, she's relocated to Detroit and raised by a woman named Felicia Callahan...that's right, you heard me: CLAIRE GROWS UP TO BE A CALLAHAN. Bonus points if she actually gets along with Cain. :p]
“I hate you!”
Felicia Callahan lifted her head sharply at the sound of her youngest screaming at someone followed by the sound of a slamming door. Patiently she waited as she heard the door swing back open and the loud yell that followed told her exactly who was fighting in her house again.
“Damnit, Claire, get back here!” Cain yelled after the girl as she stomped away from him.
“Screw you!” Claire shouted back as she stomped into the kitchen.
“Claire Elizabeth Callahan, watch your language.” Felicia fixed the young blonde with a look as she turned around, crossing her arms over her chest before she brought her attention to her son who was looking for Claire. “What did you do?”
“Me?” He blinked at his mother before pointing at the petite blonde. “She is the one who did it!”
“I didn’t do anything!” Claire’s mouth dropped open as she stared at the older man who she had been raised with and then she whirled to face her adoptive mother. “I was merely standing outside with Jason and Cain freaked out.”
“You weren’t doing anything! You were practically going at it on the front lawn!”
“I was not!”
Felicia stood there quietly, letting the argument fade into the background as she watched the two of them. It had been a big decision to adopt Claire back when she was just a baby. Just a young girl, barely two years old, with no real connections left in the world. She had a mother who died in a fire and a father, as well as a family, who didn’t really want her. No, maybe the decision had been easy but there had been some definition ups and downs. Still, there was no denying the fact that Claire fit in with the rest of the Callahans. She was passionate, loud and opinionated. She also knew how to handle her siblings as she was showing right now with Cain, easily going toe to toe with him. She was one of the few who would and Felicia suspected that’s why Cain looked out for her the way he did.
“You two are giving me a headache.” She sighed at the two of them but they didn’t hear her and so she brought her fingers up to her mouth, letting out a shrill whistle. It cut through the kitchen sharply, startling both of her kids and they were quick to turn to her with wide eyes. “Thank you.” She rolled her eyes before focusing on her daughter. “You. Were you making out with your boyfriend on the front law?”
“NO!” Claire huffed, crossing her arms in much the same way Felicia had earlier. “He was jsut kissing me goodbye.”
“He was damn near devouring your face.” Cain muttered, about to say more but he fell silent under a pointed look from the older woman.
Claire shot him a dark look before turning to her mother. “It was innocent. Okay, yes, he gets a little involved but it’s not like I’d let it go real far. I’m not a slut.”
“I never said that!” Cain exploded again.
“Hey! In about two seconds, someone here's gonna lose somethin' REAL important!".” Felicia rolled her eyes again, managing to hang onto some of her amusement at the two of them. “Claire, maybe tell Jason that he should not try devouring you right in front of our house? Cain, you need to chill out.”
“I am chill.” He grumbled.
“Yeah, chill like a dormant volcano.” Claire shook her head before looking at her mom. “Okay, I’ll tell him to relax.” She meant Jason of course, because she wasn’t ever sure Cain would calm down.
“Good.” Felicia smiled, pleased that she might have settled the fight for a moment. At least till Cain caught some guy pawing his little sister and decided to go off again. “I need you two to run to the store for me.”
“For what?” Claire moved to her mother’s side, peeking over her shoulder.
“I’m making homemade pizzas but someone ate all the pepperoni.”
“Gees, I wonder who that was.” Claire rolled her eyes over to Cain who was smirking now.
“I had help, remember?” He chuckled, taking the list from Felicia before slinging an arm around Claire’s shoulder to drag her along with him as he headed back towards the front door.
“Can we get ice cream on the way?”
“Yeah sure, I could use some Tiger Tiger.”
“I want bubble gum ice cream.”
Felicia listened to the two of them until the door closed behind them and she had to shake her head with a chuckle. It had been that way since the beginning; one second they were fighting like cats and dogs, the next they were best friends. It was enough to give her a headache but she knew they were better for having each other.
Still, some days she wished she had a mute button.
