Picture Prompt

“What are you making?”  Claire asked, still rubbing sleep from her eyes as she wandered into the kitchen.

“I’m making scrambled eggs.”  Cain glanced over at his young wife, smiling softly at the sight of her in his one of shirts.  He always liked the view but there was something even more charming about it now that the material was pulled over the roundness of her stomach.

“Eww.”  Clearly the idea of scrambled eggs didn’t sound so good to Claire but honestly it was more the smell than anything.

He couldn’t help but sigh as he looked down at the pan in front of him.  “Guess I’ll eat them all.”  Great, he wasn’t sure he really wanted that many.  Shrugging it off, he glanced up at her.  “What do you want?”

“I don’t know.”  She stood in front of the fridge, staring thoughtfully at the contents inside before she picked out a bottle of orange juice.  “I still have a craving for tuna.”  She closed the fridge door, glancing over at him.  “I love those sandwiches from that shop by the hospital.”

“I can get you one.”  Maybe she’d get those little berry candies she liked too.

“Are you going to be at the appointment?”  She glanced over at him, opening her orange juice to take a sip.

“Shit.”  Cain muttered.  “What time is it?”

“It’s at two.  They might do an ultrasound just to check up on things after the scare.”

“Shit.”  He started to frown.  “I have surgeries this afternoon.  I’m not sure I’ll be able to make it.”

Claire did her best to hide the disappointment but there was no hiding the frown.  “Really?  I thought you were going to be there.”  She sighed softly, watching him sit down with a plate of scrambled eggs.    As the smell wafted over her, she sat back a little and brought the bottle up near her lips if only so the smell of the orange juice would overpower the smell of his scrambled eggs.

“I know, baby, and I want to be but I have surgeries.”  He was already wondering if he could get out of them but he knew it would be impossible.  This was his job.

“Fine.”  She sighed, taking a small sip of her orange juice while watching him.

They sat in silence as Cain devoured his eggs before getting up to put the plate in the sink.  Then he walked around to her side, leaning down to kiss her cheek.  “I promise, babe, I’ll be there when the baby comes.”

“You better be.”  She tilted her head back for a kiss and smiled a little when he gave it to her.  “Or I’m gonna beat you as soon as I get off the table.”  The smile grew when he chuckled.

“If I miss the birth, you can fuckin’ bury me in the backyard.”

“Don’t tempt me.”  She warned him playfully, a smile still flirting with her mouth as she took another kiss from him.    As he moved away to get ready for his shift, she sighed and leaned against the table while reaching to rub a hand over her small belly.  “It’ll be okay, sweetie.”

Even after he had told her that he probably wouldn’t be at the appointment, Claire still held out hope that he would show up but there was no sign of him as she went through her appointment.  When they told her they would do an ultrasound, she went back to hoping that maybe he would find a way to come along when she sent him a text but the fact that she got no answer told her he was busy.

She hated laying there in the dark room as they studied her baby and the size.  The baby was fine, good in size and progress.  They even told her the sex which made her smile but it was all tainted by the fact that Cain wasn’t there.  So she couldn’t deny she was near tears as she walked out of the ultrasound room, hating the fact that she couldn’t exalt in the joy of her news.

“Claire!”

At the call of her name, Claire turned around to find her husband jogging towards her.  He was dressed in a blue scrubs and she could see the mask was still around his neck which said he had gone running out of the surgery room as soon as it was possible for him to do so.

“Cain.”  She tried to smile at him, sniffling a little.

“Is it the baby?”  He worried at the look on her face, slowing down.  His heart was in his throat as he stopped in front of her, his hands moving to her arms.

“What, no?  She’s fine.”  Claire shook her head, swallowing.  “I just wish you could have been there.”

“I know, baby.”  He relaxed as he pulled her into his arms.  “I...wait.  Did you say ‘she’?”  There went his heart again.

Even though her eyes were blurring over from the tears, Claire smiled with a little nod.  “Yeah, you got your wish.  We’re having a little girl.”

“Fucking yeah!”  The cheer echoed down the hall as he scooped her up with a laugh, twirling her around.  When he finally set her down, his fingers delved into her long curls as he brought her mouth back to his for another searing kiss as he tried to express everything he was feeling in that moment.

Laughing, she pulled back.  “I take it having a girl is a good thing?”

“Fuck yes.”  Cain beamed down at her before his features softened and his fingers moved to caress her cheeks.  “I want a little girl who looks just like you.  A little carbon copy.”

“I’m hoping she has your eyes.”  She replied, shaking her head before chuckling.  “Are you done now?”

“I am.”  He nodded, wrapping an arm around her again.  “Let’s go get you one of those tuna sandwiches.  Hell, let’s get two to celebrate since we can’t do champagne.”

“Sounds good to me, I’m famished.”  She smiled, leaning into him as they started back down the hall.  He would have to change before they could leave.  “Could you do me a favour though?”

“Anything.  You name it.”  He was in the mood to do whatever she wanted.

“No more scrambled eggs.”  She wrinkled her nose, shaking her head at him before she started to smile.  “I don’t think she likes them.”  She rubbed a hand over her swollen belly as her smile grew.

Cain turned around and dropped into a low squat, not caring what anyone would think as he pushed her shirt up just enough to reveal a bit of skin.  “Whatever my girls want, they get.”  He kissed the upper slope of her belly, smiling with all the love he felt.  Yes, he was pretty much grinning like an idiot.

Claire couldn’t help but laugh as she ran her fingers slowly through his hair before leaning down to kiss his forehead before she playfully pushed him over.  “Goof.”  She teased, pulling her shirt back down before she quickly danced back as he reached for her.  “Nuh uh, no.”  She had to dodge again, laughing with a squeal before she rushed past him.

Life was definitely good.
