The first pain came out of nowhere. It was a sharp, splitting pain that shot across the lower part of her stomach and actually stole her breath as she reached out quickly to brace her hand against the edge of the stove. She misjudged, her hand sliding a bit and she yelped as the tips of her fingers touched the hot burner to sear her skin. She quickly pulled back, gasping for breath as she curled her fingers into her palm and willed the pain to go away. The pain both from her stomach and now from her hand as well.
"Claire?" Cain sounded concerned as he hurried into the kitchen, called by the yelping noise she made. When he saw her bent over in pain, clutching her belly, he nearly had a heart attack. "Claire, baby, what's wrong?" He asked, rushing to her side.
"It hurts." She gasped, clutching the small curve of her stomach still as she leaned against him and was thankful for his strength.
"What does?" Fear spiked through him but he swallowed it down while curling a hand under her arm, looking down at her.
"I don't know, my stomach. It hurts all across here." She motioned at the bottom curve of her stomach and he knew that could be a bad thing but he refused to show any sort of reaction. His years of being a Doctor allowed him to keep a calm facade even if his heart was currently jumping into his throat while he considered all the bad things it could be too.
"We need to get you into the hospital." He moved his other hand to the small of her back, starting to guide her towards the back door.
"No." She sounded breathless as she shook her head.
"Claire, we need to get you checked out."
"What if they want to do tests?" She looked up at him, hating that she had to fear her ability while fearing for her child's safety. She hated herself for even pausing but the next pain made her knees go weak and she curled over her hand a little more while gripping his arm tightly enough to dig her nails into his skin through the shirt.
"Stop arguing, we're going in." He muttered at her, the worry making his tone a bit sharp. He didn't let her argue with him as he quickly pulled her out of the house and to the car. As he helped her into the passenger seat, he took a quick peek at her legs to make sure there was no blood just in case she was experiencing a miscarriage but there was no sign of anything. He took that as a good sign.
"The stove, I left the stove on." At least she had a clear enough mind to let him know that he needed to turn the stove off.
He nodded, making sure she was safely in the car before he turned to run back into the house. He took the moment to turn off the stove and then lock the door behind him before he rushed back to the car. He tried not to speed because they didn't need to be pulled over by the cops but he certainly pushed the limits as he drove to the hospital.
"Cain, slow down." Claire pressed a hand to the dashboard, praying they would make it there safely.
He proved she could trust his driving though as he did get her there safely and even had enough time to call a couple people that he knew he could trust in the hospital. They got her in right away, no questions asked probably because she was the wife of a prominent doctor and no one asked as he got her into a private room. He helped her onto a bed where a couple of the nurses started to take her blood pressure and the rate of her pulse. As Claire lay there, shivering, she listened to Cain rattle off the pains she had been having. There was some concern for the baby but they couldn't be sure till they checked everything.
Claire felt nauseous as she laid there, her eyes closed while she tried not to tremble every time they touched her and poked at her. She wasn't a big fan of praying but she did in that moment as she prayed for the baby to be okay and for them not to be exposed. She couldn't imagine what would happen if they figured out that she wasn't normal. Would they call someone? Could she expect men in uniforms to come busting into her hospital room to drag her out? Or would her dad show up?
"Claire, stop worrying." Her husband's voice floated through the worries, causing her to open her eyes as she looked up and could see all the questions in his eyes too but he was determined not to really let them show. His jaw was set in a stubborn line and she knew he would never let anything happen to her. He would never let anyone come in and take her or their baby.
Still. "I'm scared." She murmured as she looked up at him, still praying in the back of her mind as she reached for his hand.
As their hands found each other, Cain linked his fingers with hers while he nodded a bit. "I am too, baby." He muttered before leaning down to kiss her forehead. He did the praying more than she did and he was chanting a sort of mantra to anyone who was listening while he hugged Claire. "It'll be okay." He wanted her to believe it.
"We're going to see if we can find the heartbeat." Someone murmured and Cain nodded though he never took his eyes off of Claire.
As they pushed her shirt up under her breasts, she closed her eyes and started to pray quietly to herself again. As Cain put his head down next to hers, she could feel the breath of his whisper against her temple and she had a feeling he was echoing her prayers but out loud this time. She remained still as they smeared a bit of gel over her stomach and then started to press the reader over the curve of her belly. She heard the faint echo of her own heart beat, quick and a little unsteady, but she didn't hear anything else.
She swallowed thickly as the emotion started to close her throat but right as the despair started to kick in, she heard it at the same time the others did. The doctor paused where he was, pressing a little harder as he angled the reader just a bit more to cause the heart beat to come in full and strong. "There it is."
"Thank god." Cain muttered, lifting his head as Claire opened her eyes to look at the relief on everyone's faces.
"Is it okay?" She asked, almost scared.
"We still want to do an emergency ultrasound but the heart beat is strong and steady, so it doesn't sound like it's in distress." The doctor, a friend of Cain's, nodded with a small smile.
"Okay." Claire didn't want to stop worrying all together, she wasn't sure if she could let herself but the hope was enough to make her eyes sting with tears as she allowed herself a tiny bit of relief. "What caused the pain?"
"We won't know for sure till we do the ultrasound but sometimes these things happen." The doctor nodded as he continued to listen to the heart beat and then he smiled at her again. "But I wouldn't worry too much, okay?"
Claire wanted to tell him that she didn't think she could ever stop worrying. She hadn't understood it till now but now she got it. Now she got the fear of being a mother and only wanting your child to be safe even if it wasn't born yet. She had a feeling that even though she didn't do it very often, she was going to make it a habit to pray every day just for everything to turn out all right. Hell, maybe she was going to do it for the rest of her life now. If it meant her baby would be safe, she would make peace with God himself.
Whatever it took, she was going to do. No doubt about it.
