3. Sometimes in love there's no simple fix. Sometimes you just have to hang on… and lead with your heart. - The Wonder Years
These are the things you don't plan for, not really or at least she sure as hell didn't.
She should be ashamed because she knew almost right away that something was wrong. It lingered at the back of her mind even when Cain pushed her down on top of their kitchen table and made love to her while they waited for a batch of cupcakes to finish. It was certainly better than just sitting there and watching the timer.
But still, she knew something was wrong when he slid a hand under her shirt and teased the round globe with his fingers. When he squeezed, it hurt. Just a flash of pain that almost startled her since that was something that had never hurt before. She liked the roughness they had at times and it turned her on more than anything else but this time it hurt.
Afterwards, she tried to recreate the feeling.
She felt a bit stupid as she stood in their bathroom, studying her breasts in the mirror. She touched them, prodded them and winced when she pushed her hands under them a little because once again, yep, it hurt. Not only that but her breasts felt different, they felt heavier and almost warmer to her. Not that she got to focus on it for along because then she was being summoned to bed by her husband. Not wanting to alarm him, she hurriedly pulled on a shirt and joined him without any hint that she thought something was wrong.
But it was on her mind the next day, and all day till she decided to look it up.
She found one of the websites that Cain had talked about a few times, some sort of medical site where you could put in some symptoms and find out what was wrong with you. But what could she put besides the fact that she had tender breasts? Feeling a bit foolish, she put the symptom in but instantly she was warned by a little popup that she could seek emergency medical attention if she were experiencing chest pains. Rolling her eyes, she clicked the little x-button because she knew she wasn't having a heart attack.
But everything she looked through warned her with the same little pop up and an hour later she found herself with no answers.
Not till she noticed a little tab that made her blood run cold: Parenting and Pregnancy.
Oh god.
Ignoring the shakiness in her hand, she moved the mouse to point the arrow over the tab and she clicked it. Instantly her vision was assaulted with the image of a baby and a pregnant woman. She felt almost foolish for looking as she scrolled through until another heading caught her attention, something about the eight early signs of pregnancy. Reading over them was enough to send her rushing out of the house as she only had a short amount of time to get a pregnancy test before Cain would be home. Claire didn't think she had ever done so much running so much in her life.
When she got back, she was relieved to see she was alone still and she quickly ran upstairs to lock herself in the very bathroom where she had pretty much groped her own breasts to try and find answers. She did as the instructions told her to do, being careful not to pee any more than she needed to on the stick. After that, it was pure torture as she paced and waited. She tried counting off the seconds in her head but the quick looks stolen at the stick kept distracting her. As soon as she saw a sign starting to form, she snatched it up and watched silently as her life changed right in front of her eyes.
It didn't matter that she took the rest again or rushed out to get two more. The answer was always the same and they mocked her in a row of four plus signs sitting on her bathroom counter.
"Oh....I'm in so much trouble." She whispered as she slowly sank down to sit on the edge of the bath tub.
Claire Callahan was pregnant.
