12. If you're scared about the future // I'm scared about the past // And if you're feeling ill // It's cos the world is spinning fast // Yeah, you're staring at the sun // Yeah, you better all hold on // And watch the sky become the ground -- [Forever Young - Eskimo Joe]
There were no words as they walked back into the house, his soft humming the only sound that disturbed the silence. The forest didn't even seem to make a sound around them; it was almost like everything had gone still as soon as the hunt started and every eye had turned away from the scene unfolding. She wondered if horror had scared every single living entity away. There were no birds in the trees or in the water nearby; she couldn't even hear the crickets or the frogs. There was only Sylar as he hummed softly to himself or she wondered if he was humming to her.
He had been nice enough to give her his shirt for the walk back, so that she didn't have to walk back in the nude. Maybe it was to cover some of the blood too but there was no denying the crown of drying blood that she wore. A perfect dried line across her forehead and running further to mark her face, except for the spot where his skin had rubbed her own. There was a faint shade of it on his cheek, almost lost in the shadow of his facial hair but neither of them paid it any mind.
As they stepped into the cabin, his hand touched briefly to the small of her back but she moved away quickly. So quickly that it almost startled him as he stood there, touching air and watching her as she hurried away. He found himself alone in the entrance to their living room, his humming replaced by the sound of a door slamming as she rushed into the bathroom. He almost wondered if he should follow but the click of the lock told him to choose otherwise.
Claire gripped the edge of the sink as she kept her gaze averted from the mirror because she wasn't sure she could bear to look at what had been done.
In all their fights, all the five years that had passed, he had never pinned her and cut her head open. Not since that first time when he had come for her and her ability. He had done everything else to her but never that. He had broken her over and over but he had never gone that far. Tonight changed that.
Tonight he had pinned her to a tree and she had seen the vacant look in his eyes as he cut her head open to look at her brain. She tried to tell herself that it was love and the need to feel something else that had sent her into his arms right after but she's not sure. They had made love against the tree after her put the top of her head back on and now she has to wonder what kind of person could have sex after something like that.
She felt like her entire world was spinning and she almost felt like being sick but she wouldn't let herself get to that point. Her fingers trembled as she unbuttoned her shirt, ignoring the blood on it as she let it drop to the ground before she moved over to the shower to turn the water on. She let it run as hot as it would go, steam billowing up from the bottom of the tub to caress her face and bring forth the shine of perspiration as she crawled in.
As she created a cocoon in the shower, she sank down slowly to sit under the spray of water. She could see the blood running over her skin as the hot water turned her lobster red but she couldn't feel it. There was nothing, only numbness except for the phantom ache in the center of her chest and the sound in her ears. The sound of a screaming saw.
Claire wasn't sure how long she sat in there and she wasn't sure how she missed the sound of the lock turning but she was aware of Sylar cursing when he tried to reach in to turn off the water. He muttered, jumping back as the hot water sent pain shooting over his nerve endings and she almost hated him for it.
"Damnit, Claire." He cursed at her, glaring at the taps and she could hear them turning as the water turned cool before shutting off. The air from beyond the bathroom penetrated the steamy haze and she almost shivered as she watched the blistering burns on her skin fade from sight. Sylar stood there for a moment, confusion replacing the annoyance at the pain as he watched her hug her knees a little tighter and he could see she was shaking.
When she actually burst into tears, they were both startled and awkward. She was sure he wouldn't touch her but then he surprised them both by reaching for her. She wasn't sure how he got the towel around her but she didn't complain as he sank to the floor while pulling her into his lap. The only thing she could do was wrap her arms around him as she pressed her face to his neck and tried to make herself stop.
She wasn't supposed to be this girl anymore. This girl was gone, she had been destroyed years before and she had thought there was no coming back but here she was. She didn't hurt and yet she couldn't breathe; she almost felt torn apart again. She knew it would pass though, it would fade and she would be the woman she had become but for now there were no shields to hide behind.
He had cut them down again.
