1. “Emotion always has its roots in the unconscious and manifests itself in the body.” - Irene Claremont de Castillejo
The fight wasn't supposed to lead to the exposure of so many family secrets. She knew it had been coming, she knew that the truth of Nathan's parentage would come out eventually but she was still blindsided when it happened. She knew it was worse for him but she could remember the day that she had been told that she wasn't actually a child of Sandra and Noah Bennet. Yes, she was their child but not by blood. They had raised her but, by blood; she was linked to another set of parents. After that, she had felt some of her identity didn't make sense to her and all she had wanted was answers. She had imagined what her biological parents were like and did she get her ability from them?
She did and she was starting to learn that she was quite a bit like the one. Nathan was emotional, more than he let on but he had a way of tempering it and hiding what he felt. Claire wasn't as skilled as he was most of the time, she was lead by her emotions and whatever she was feeling often came out. But there were things that she tried hiding and she wasn't sure she was doing a good job at all. She was sure that Peter could sense the panic attacks were happening again; not with the same frequency but they were still there. The nightmares were still a constant as well, riddling her nights with dark images that she didn't want to remember and left aches all over her body. Strange, imaginary aches that couldn't be real because of her ability but she swore she still felt them.
But it wasn't the time right now because Nathan needed her; they all needed her to be okay because the entire family was feeling the effects of the fight and then the big bomb that had been dropped. Secrets belonging to Adam and Angela had all been laid bare in front of everyone and while she had known some of them, she still felt the aftershocks. Things hadn't been fully resolved with Nathan but he seemed to want to try now, he seemed to want to put her first but right now she wanted to focus on him and not on the strange guilt she had been feeling since the talk at Angela's house.
They had all talked about trust and being honest but Claire wasn't sure that she was. There were things she was still hiding, things she wasn't sure she could talk about for fear of the reactions of others. Some of them would maybe understand but what about the ones she was scared of finding out? How would they react if they knew the truth?
As she sat in her room, she cradled her head between her hands as she tried to ignore the ache in the center of her chest or the distinct feeling of being a little nauseous. The latest panic attack had just faded away, leaving her to tremble in its wake as she sat in the center of her bed. The nightmare that had left her in a state of panic lingered in the back of her mind; the scene of Brody Mitchum in her dreams and Knox who punished her for what she had done. She swallowed thickly as she tried to chase the images away. Pushing her fingers through her hair, she slid from the bed to head to the bathroom so that she could splash some cold water on her face. Just a few minutes was all she needed and she would be back in control.
Except for the small ache in the center of her chest.
