It's their second date and Claire is happy that Gabriel managed not to cancel on her this time because she half expected the frantic phone calls with the excuses that he couldn’t meet with her but, thankfully, the calls never came. Maybe Molly had been quicker to stop him this time or maybe he was finally comfortable enough not to be as freaked out as he had been before.
Since Gabriel’s last babysitter quit, Claire arranged for Gabriel to meet her friend who lived across the hall from her so that Nicky could watch Molly while Gabriel went out with Claire. It worked out well since Gabriel showed up at Claire’s apartment to pick her up for the date instead of meeting her at the theatre, explaining that Nicky had decided to arrive early so that Gabriel and Claire could have more time. Of course with him showing up earlier, she left him to look around her apartment as she finished getting dressed. Also she needed a breather after seeing his outfit which she knew wasn't his usual style but the jeans made her mouth grow dry the minute she saw him in them. She chose a pair of slim fitting blue jeans and a yellow strapless baby doll top, the same shade of yellow as his jacket strangely enough. He pointed out with a big smile as they set out onto their date.
For as awkward as they could be at times, it was surprisingly easy for them to talk and to joke around. It probably helped that even though this was only their second date, they had spent time with each other before. Not really dating but more just hanging out at his apartment but maybe that was because neither one of them thought that there was a chance of a relationship, not till Claire finally got the courage to ask him out. Maybe they had realized it before but it wasn’t till after Claire helped Molly did it really click in for them both.
When they got to the movie theatre, there was some debate about who was going to pay for what since Gabriel thought that she shouldn’t pay for anything but she finally convinced him that she should pay for the candy and drinks. He only agreed after she promised to let him pay for the ice cream.
They chose a couple seats in the back of the theatre, both of them agreeing that they weren’t fond of someone being behind them but Claire also wondered if perhaps it was because it was darker than it was in the front. She also noticed that there weren’t a lot of people in their specific theatre which suited her just fine. It made her feel like they were somehow alone even in the big room with the big screen.
As their arms brushed, she looked down as she had the strong urge to hold his hand but they had their respective goodies to deal with too. She opened her bag of Reese’s pieces, glancing at him as she held up one piece, “Want some?”
“Uh sure.” He looked around then, searching for a place to put down his drink and his small popcorn but she didn’t wait. She reached over then, holding the piece right in front of him and she watched as he looked at her with surprise before leaning forward a bit to take it from her. Tingles ran up her arm as his lips brushed against her fingertips and the air around them changed just a bit, a charge of electricity seeming to wrap around them as she felt strangely breathless for a minute.
She dropped her fingers then, drawing in a slow breath as she looked over at the big screen to try to focus on the previews that were showing but she found it impossible to think at all. She stole little peeks at him through the first hour of the movie, sometimes catching him looking at her and other times he wasn’t but then he would rather quickly as though he was aware of her looking over.
When he finally leaned over, she wasn’t sure if he had done so with the intention to whisper something to her or if the plan had been to kiss her but that’s exactly what happened seconds after she turned her head to look at him. She leaned into the seemingly innocent kiss, their mouths brushing a little before she deepened the kiss. Or maybe he had been the one to deepen it but either way, her tongue brushed against his lips lightly before finally gaining entrance to tease against his own tongue.
She missed the rest of the movie as they continued to kiss, pretty much making out in the back of the theatre like a couple of teenagers.
When they realized the movie was done and the theatre empty, they quickly scrambled to get out of there, giggling and blushing as they hurried out to the street. Since her mouth was swollen from his kisses, she had no problem taking his hand and linking their fingers as they walked to a nearby ice cream shop.
“You know, I’ve never really done that before.” He murmured, glancing over with a shy but pleased little smile.
“What?”
“You know,” He shrugged as he motioned back at the movie theatre.
“You mean, make out in a movie theatre?” She was strangely pleased about that.
“Yeah.” He chuckled a little bit, rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand and she had to smile at how adorable he could be at times.
She was still smiling as they stopped in front of her door an hour later and she turned to face him, having an almost awkward moment as she fished out her keys and then looked at him. “So, I’ll come by tomorrow to pick Molly up for a little bit?”
“Sure.” Gabriel nodded his head, his smile growing.
For a minute or two longer they looked at each other before finally she stepped forward, leaning up to kiss him. He tasted like vanilla and sprinkles and he decided she tasted like strawberries. As they pulled apart, she smiled softly, “I’ll see you tomorrow.” She nodded, unlocking her door before turning back for another quick kiss and then another. Then another before finally he stepped back, clearing his throat a bit.
“See you tomorrow, Claire.” He whispered, blushing now as he hurried away, his gait a bit stiff.
She wasn’t expecting to hear from till the next afternoon and so when her phone rang a couple hours later, near midnight, she nearly had a heart attack when she saw his name on the small screen. She flipped the phone open quickly, sitting up, “Gabriel? Are you okay?” She was worried that something had happened.
“What? Yes, I’m fine. I’m sorry; I just wanted to...hear your voice.” The last part was mumbled and she blinked a bit before she started to smile, sitting back in her bed.
“You just called in the middle of the night to say hi?” She asked, giggling softly.
“Yes?” He sounded a little unsure of himself now, “Did I wake you?”
“No, not at all, I was just laying here in bed and reading.” She glanced at the text book that she had abandoned after ten minutes of trying to read but instead she was distracted by replaying the events of the date in her head.
“You’re in bed?” He practically squeaked.
“Yes.” She smirked while deciding she was glad he couldn’t see the coy look. “What about you?”
“Me?”
“Yes, are you in bed?”
“N-no, I’m just sitting on my couch.”
“Oh.” A slight pause, “What are you wearing?”
There was a long pause on the other end and she swore she could actually hear him dying of embarrassment before he finally answered. “Pajamas?” He sounded unsure of himself which made her giggle softly.
“What color?”
“Uh...gray.” Another long pause before he finally managed, “What are you...wearing?”
“T-shirt and panties, just like always.” She glanced down at herself, biting back another laugh.
“I....” His breathing sounded a bit ragged now and she listened quietly, waiting for something else.
“Gabriel?” She whispered his name a moment later.
“Yes?” His voice was husky and low, causing her stomach to jump just a bit as she swallowed thickly.
“Are you okay?” She asked.
“I’m fine.” She could hear the audible swallow, “I...what color?”
She blinked at the question before catching on to what he meant, “Black and pink.”
The sound that came next sounded almost like a groan before he finally answered, “Okay. I...I should go before I wake Molly up.”
She smiled a little bit, nodding her head even though he couldn’t see her. “Okay, see you tomorrow?”
“Yes.” His answer was a bit rushed, “Tomorrow.”
“Goodnight, Gabriel, have a good sleep.”
“Goodnight Claire.”
She waited for a minute, listening for the click on the other end but it never came which made her laugh softly, “Hang up, silly.”
When the click came, she smiled before flipping her phone closed and tossing it onto the bedside stand. She pushed the book off of her bed before leaning over to turn off her light, snuggling down under her blankets as she continued to smile till she fell asleep.
