The pain surprised her when it came, she wasn't used to physical pain anymore but it was there, the pain was fresh and hot, as it ripped through her when their eyes clashed and held. His blue and hers green, a mix of emotions naked in both of their gazes as they both tried to make sense of what was happening.
She wanted to ask him a million questions but the most important was: Why?
She had guessed that he was back working with the Company, doing work for Angela but she would have never guessed for a moment that he was doing this. She would have never thought that she would find him sitting in the co-pilot seat of the plane that was carrying people they knew, some people that had helped them and had helped her. People that she had ties to, one of them was even a real blood relative of hers. They had worked with some of these people to save the world and yet here he was, flying them to some unknown destination where they would likely be locked up forever.
Was he just trying to protect her? Was that why he allowed her to live with Angela, under the belief that her biological grandmother would keep her distracted and unaware of what was going on? Did he really think that she wouldn't find out?
There was a lump in her throat and she wondered if there was one in his as he saw the betrayal in her eyes, the pain as she realized that once again they were on opposite sides. Once again they would face each other and their relationship would be tested once more. She wanted to ask him to explain himself but then the plane started to lose control.
She didn't once look out the window to look at the ground as it rapidly approached, she watched him as he turned away and tried to stop them from crashing but it was hopeless. Everything felt hopeless in that moment. She didn't even try to save herself when the plane hit the ground because a part of her didn't even care.
It wasn't because she could heal herself but at this moment she wanted any sort of potential physical pain that she could feel, she hoped that there would be something even if she knew there wouldn't be. All she wanted was some sort of relief from the ache in the center of her chest as their eyes met again. She heard him yell her name and she hated that he sounded like he cared, it would be easier if he didn't.
She didn't want to see him anymore and so she closed her eyes as the explosion of sound erupted around her, drowning out the sound of his voice even as she could hear screams from behind her.
