A philosophical query for your @$$

OK, so I just had a mini-discussion wih my friends, and I thought I would pose a question to the general LiveJournal public: do you believe that people are inherently good (or born good people) and they become "bad people" through a series of environmental factors, or are some people just born to be bitches and assholes?

Actually Khemra, it is not physical appearances that change through environment, but it is the environment that selects which traits will be best suited for survival in said habitat. It will not change an individual but instead takes place very slowly over many many generations.

I dunno what that had to do with anything at all...

BUT

It my belief that man is inherently good. Such beliefs can be expressed by the works of Locke and his treatise on gov't or Rousseau's social contract. Even if we were to disregard the idea of what is "good" or "bad" we would still find that as a matter of selfishness or survival, man will form a social contract with society that will guarantee his safety as well as that of the rest of the society for mutual gain. The fact that self-interest inadvertantly is good for the interest of all seems to show that the argument for a "good" human nature is best.
