“I don’t think Jesus would mind if someone was a vampire.” - Sookie Stackhouse

The reasons I am digging HBO’s new vampire series TRUE BLOOD. ...

1) Brutality. Right off the bat in “The First Taste” we got a handful of just brutal killings from the demented Mack and Denise looking to harvest Bill’s (Stephen Moyer) blood.

2) Quirky. Strange characters, weird locale, odd dialogue and that incredibly bizarre get together at Sookie’s grandmother’s house. Plus, what’s up with the whole PHENOMENA-style attraction to Sookie? Bugs, dogs and other weird stuff seem to follow her wherever she goes.

3) Anna Paquin. She’s totally hot. Even with blood stains.

4) That psychedelic acid trip of an opening.

5) Sex and nudity. Hot damn, this is what we should get with the romanticized vampire myth and leave to HBO to give it to us.

6) Twists. From Jason’s supposed murdering of a local girl (but he didn’t do it we find out in this episode) to Sookie’s beating - which ends up far worse for those that attacked here. Who’s biting all the females in the town? We are kept guessing. Here’s hoping it continues.

7) Supernatural elements. Does Sookie Stackhouse (Paquin) have super powers other than the ability to read minds? Or was it Bill that launched the dude into the air? And if she does, are we going to see a supernatural forces element come into play that battle the vampires? Or am I thinking this is too much action for one series?

8) Sookie’s parents. We don’t have the full story on this at all. It is a sore subject for her and her childhood flashback points to them being scared of her so it obviously has something to do with her powers - which Sookie also has bad feelings about.

9) Odd romance - A vampire and a mind reading waitress? This ain’t Romeo and Juliet.

10) The transsexual, existential cook. See quirky, above.

11) Vamp myths Part One. Bill constantly refers to a “we” as in a company of vampires. Is there a council? Is there a higher order? Can’t wait to find out although we see a little bit of this at the end of “The First Taste.”

12) Vamp Myths Part Two. Bill says some vampires can change shape, others can’t. He can heal with his blood and is “very strong.” He also must be invited into a house. Does garlic have any affects? What about a stake to the heart? What about holy water?

13) Bringing the funny. From Sookie’s dating life to Tara’s attitude with everyone, they work in ways to give us a chuckle among the fangs.

14) Vampires in the real world. What an interesting concept and the whole talk show in “The First Taste” is exactly how you’d expect it to be with a number of pro and con groups debating it. Obviously, the vamps killed the anti-vampire advocate and his family and Sookie knew it.

15) DEADWOOD’s William Sanderson as Sheriff Bud Dearborne as a non-dumbass character.

16) Awkward, albeit, hilarious dinner meetings.

16) The leaving you with wanting more episode endings. I want more now especially after the previews that show we get to know a little more about Bill’s entourage and his place in the pecking order.
