Ed hates cats. Not for simplistic reasons either. And the feeling is no regular dislike. No, Ed loathes cats.
Al finds this odd. He loves cats. Especially the young ones. Small, delicate balls of fur that Al enjoys cradling in his palms. He likes how vulnerable they are. How dependent upon their master and yet so independent.
Really, cats remind Al of his brother. Ed can be just like his beloved felines. Stubborn, arrogant, but also needy.
He thinks that’s why Ed hates cats so much. Oh, Ed will explain away reasons why they can never have a pet, but Al knows better. They don’t travel nearly as much as they used to. And they do have the means. Ed just does not want something else vying for his brother’s attention (Winry is distraction enough).
In the long run, Al doesn’t really mind. He has his hands full, as it is, and he’d much rather enjoy the distraction from his brother that he receives whenever he asks.
“Nii-san, can we get a cat? Please?”
“Al! Why do you have to ask now? It’s seven o’clock in the morning!”
“Please?”
“I have a better idea. Why don’t we…”
“Mmm… Nii-san… But?”
“Shh…”
“Mmm… ‘kay…”
