Android: Google maps ate my batteries!?

Apr 13, 2011 01:07

This is a note for those who may have Maps on their android phones. I just checked the battery usage and found that Maps had about 90% of the battery use since last the phone was charged, even though I had not used Maps in that time. Evidently it continues to run in the background. Evidently closing it from "battery" in settings does not actually close it. Evidently closing it from Settings - Applications - Manage applications - Running does not actually close it either, as it is still there when you return.

I have installed the free version of Advanced Task Killer, and at least it does not appear on the list of programs to kill. But I wonder whether this is enough, or whether I will have to uninstall Maps and reinstall it each time I actually need it.

Update: The problem is known and has persisted for a while. Rebooting the phone puts Maps away until it is actually used again, so it should not be necessary to actually uninstall it. (Although I am not sure which is the most time consuming...)

Unlike some reporting this, I actually see battery life being disturbingly short. I had it fully charged when I left work, and now by bedtime it is 35%. I only used it for some 20-30 minutes on the commute home, and not very intensely at that. So something has been eating it. Going to see if Advanced Task Killer does the trick or whether I need to reboot. If this was the case on the Hero too, that may have contributed to its rapid decline in its older months.
