The little girl stared at the corpse of her mother, killed only moments before by the blonde lady that had seemed nice, but she had seen the look in her mother’s eyes. Her mom had been angry at the lady’s arrival and had ordered her out of the kitchen.

Nikki had gone to her room, wondering why her mother was so snappish about her leaving. When she heard the sounds of fighting, she covered her ears and squinted her eyes shut, trying to block out the sound. After she heard the last blow, she counted a full minute before venturing out of her room. There she saw her mother, dead. Crawling through the broken glass, heedless of the pain, she sat with her mother’s head cradled in her lap, wondering who would take care of her now.

Pip Bernadette was a man that took money for dirty jobs and asked no questions, so when the man that just called himself “Bill” hired him for a special assignment, he did just that. First off, he would have to talk with the other members of Bill’s clique, called “The Five-Viper Squad-Whatever” or something like that. His first stop was at Vernita Green’s house. Already he could tell there was trouble when he knocked on the door. There was no answer, yet Bill had said she would be waiting for him. He opened the door and heard a muffled sob, and stared at the glass and other smashed objects in the house.

Guess someone was already here. Probably that crazy woman Bill was talking about. Pip stepped inside, and looked over towards the kitchen to where he heard the muffled sobbing. Great. He wasn’t exactly the best person around kids. He couldn’t stand to be around a kid for more than five minutes without wanting to place a gun to his head. He checked the rest of the house to make sure that he wasn’t going to be attacked before heading back into the kitchen to look over the girl. Drawing some chocolate from one of his many pockets, he crouched down a few feet away and studied the girl before speaking.

“Hey, what happened here?”

The little girl looked up at him, her face stained with salty streaks of tears. She looked back down at her mother, then back up at him with a “What the hell do you think?” expression. Pip sighed. Waving the chocolate to her, he was treated to a smack on his hand and the girl turning back to her mother.

“Can you at least tell me your name?”

The girl’s voice was muffled. “Nikki.”

Pip nodded once. That was a start, at least. Now to figure out what to do with her. Calling the police was out of the question. He already had used every trick that he knew to avoid them while he was in the States. The other Wild Geese were still in France, waiting for him to return. There had been another job waiting for them, dealing with an organization called Hellsing. “My name’s Pip. Look, is there someone we can call who would look after you?”

Nikki nodded once, dumbly, and pointed to a little black book that was on a counter behind a cookie jar. Pip stood and flipped through the pages, seeing the contacts for other people that Green must have been in league with. At the back of the book was a number, with “Bill” written on it. Looking around, he spotted a phone and dialed the number. A gruff voice answered him.

Pip explained the situation and was given orders to stay where he was, and somebody would come to retrieve the child. Inwardly, he growled in frustration, but asked how long before someone would come and get her. The answer was six hours.

Now he balked. Stay in this house with a corpse that was going to start to smell and with a kid? He would rather be in Uganda. Instead of asking for another option, he merely said that he would stay. After he hung up the phone, he looked back down at the corpse. Nikki was bleeding from the numerous cuts the glass had inflicted on her legs, and the woman herself wasn’t getting any fresher. Going back into the bedroom, he yanked the sheet off the bed and returned to the kitchen, gently nudging Nikki away so that he could at least cover Green. The scream that accompanied the girl made him wish that there was a screwdriver handy so that he could jam it into his eardrums.

“Look, kid, someone is coming to get you. One of your mom’s friends,” he shouted as soothingly as he could over the girl’s crying. Dammit, with her acting up like this, the police would come, because it sounded like the girl was being brutally murdered. Nikki looked at him with tears in her eyes and screamed again. Pip clapped his hand over her mouth, and was rewarded by her sharp teeth digging into his palm. Yelping himself, he snatched his hand away and glared at the blood seeping from the wounds on his hands. The kid was a damned vampire. Again he tried to calm her down, while trying not to bellow out himself. Every few seconds, he checked the window to see if there were officers coming to break down the doors.

Strangely enough, no officers came. The girl was starting to quiet down after an hour, which gave Pip a chance to cover up Green’s body with the sheet and clean up his own bleeding hand. Picking up the little girl, he headed to the bathroom to clean up her cuts and bandage them. This was not in his job description, but money was money. His reward for trying to help the girl was a few smacks to his face; more screams and a kick to the groin that left him retching in the toilet while Nikki ran back out to her mother’s corpse.

As said before, Pip Bernadette was not good with kids, so he stayed in a chair, holding his ears while he waited for the contact to arrive. Nikki alternately cried and glared at Pip for the time that remained, finally falling asleep on the couch from exhaustion. After five hours, a rapping on the door made him sigh with relief. Looking through the peephole, he saw a blonde woman with an eye patch like his glaring. He opened the door and merely pointed to Nikki. The woman brushed past him and picked the little girl up, examining her for any injuries other than those that she had inflicted on herself. All in all, Pip was relieved to have the girl taken away, even as he watched her cry about her mother again. As the blonde woman handed over a billfold of money, he silently took it and walked out of the house.

He was heading back to France as fast as he could. Let “The Bride” take care of these people here. He could hide out for a while before he took on his new assignment.
