Nerding out

I registered domains for my business and then tried one hosting company. After having an immediate problem with their web design tool, I demanded a refund. The registrations are still valid, but no web site yet. A number of the other hosting firms I saw use WordPress. It used to have a reputation for being great for blogs but not for visuals, the companies say otherwise now. However, since those companies just provide WordPress hosting, they really don't know if it can do what I want. It has templates, but they all look like one-page site templates and I don't know how easy it is to re-use the templates for multiple pages.

Therefore, the geek has come out. How do I look at WordPress before paying a hosting company? Well, I'm looking at installing Apache, PHP, MySQL, all prerequisites, and then WordPress on my computer. I'm rusty at this stuff, so we'll see how long it takes. Sadly, I have the time.
