Jon Stewart again displays the neo-lib psychosis
One of this week's episodes of The Daily Show again perfectly showed the problems neo-libs have trying to contort their weird PC views. There were two bits, back to back, that were interesting.
In the first, he hassled the idiot preacher in Florida who thinks burning Korans will accomplish anything. It's not hassling him that's the problem, it's how. They did a bit where they compared the Koran with all the bad things in the Torah, attempting to make the point that Christianity and Judaism also use violent texts.
Then, right after, Stewart ranted against Iran's plan to stone an adulterer. He asked if they want to live BC or AD.
Think about that. Yes, the Torah has violent things. However, name a Christian or Jewish nation that stones adulterers. A nation that cuts of the hands of thieves. Jon just won't let himself look at the truth: Christianity and Judaism have moved past the violent cultures of 2,000 years ago and tried to reinterpret the religions for the modern era.
For the most part, Islam has not tried to do the same. The Koran, Hadith and Sharia, centuries old, are still followed. Iran is only the most extreme. While most Muslim countries have changed, let's remember they changed due to political pressure from the West. Most importantly, they still believe the only law that should exist is Sharia. It is where the laws come from. If "moderate" Muslims decide to change some punishments, that's minor. They still claim only rights Muslims grant are rights, universal rights don't exist.
It was the idea of universal suffrage, though it's a long struggle to bring to fruition, from the original thoughts to a reality we're still trying to achieve, most of the west is trying.
The Torah is not still the literal word, even for fundamentalist Christian who claim it is, but the Koran still is. Until a major shift in Islam happens, that's not something that should be ignored. However, to try to support the ignorance of equivalence, Stewart and others must ignore the reality of mainstream Islam, the difference between how the three major western religions view their holy books, and what's happening today.
