Either way, the Iranian election is dangerous

Ahmadinejad won the election by an overwhelming margin. His slightly less radical opponent has cried foul, claiming the Revolutionary Council rigged the election. Whichever way Ahmadinejad won, it's bad for the world.

If he won through fraud, it just once again shows that he's only a puppet. That he's not a "leader" in any sense. The Council has absolute power in the country. Those who speak of "talking to him" or of any kind of democracy in Iran are deluded at best. The international community is being told the Council wants nuclear weapons and that it feels the UN and the other nations are too weak and divided to do anything about it.

If he won fairly, that clearly destroys any claim that the "real Iran" is moderate and wants change. All reports where that there was a very high turnout for the election. That the citizenry voted 62.6% in favor of nuclear weapons and wiping Israel off the map is just what that nation is: A group of Muslims intent on jihad.

So, either way, it's a lesson the West should learn, take to heart and use to modify its approach to the nation. Will it? I doubt it.

iran, elections, ahmadinejad
