The big news on France24 is the beginning of the trial of a bunch of big name folks accused of selling arms to Angola during its civil war. Well, not the beginning, but just before it was supposed to begin, it looks like the trial may be canceled. The rumors are flying.
It's a huge scandal there, and France24 keeps going back to the latest news. As with any media outlet, they need a name for the scandal. What really bothers me, an ex-pat American, is what they've chosen. Yup, it's "Angolagate". How many people in the US comprehend the origins of "-gate"? Not many. Imagine how much smaller a fraction of folks it is in the station's coverage area. They need to quit whining about US culture if they're going to blindly use -gate.
On a tangent, one of the key figures is Russian-Jewish-Israeli businessman Arkadi Gaydamak. He moved to Israel a few years ago, in a large part, to escape the trial.
