Microsoft just started advertising its Origami device. It sounds kind of neat, but it only has a 3.5h battery life at most and will cost $600-1100 when it first becomes available.
If I could, I'd make a similar device with the following characteristics:
* 8 hour battery life
* scratch-resistant touch screen with stylus (unlike the iPod, which gets scratched easily)
* Wi-fi connectivity
* GPS receiver
* VGA port
It's actually not a whole lot different from what the Origami seems to be. I think it would be neat to have a handheld computer that could allow you to e-mail and search the web, help give you directions if you are lost, enable you to take notes, and allow you to connect it to a projector for a presentation. What else would a graduate student need?
Is there something like this on the market for a reasonable price? PalmPilots are probably close, but they don't have the VGA capability, and the reviews of their Wi-Fi adapter say that it drains the battery like crazy. Not that I have the money to burn... If it cost $300 or less, I'd consider it. I haven't gotten any new toys in a long time.
