So the people in charge of Rites of Spring finally got around to announcing the co-headliner (along with The Flaming Lips, already announced). And it is...T.I. I'm pleased with it because they got some star power, a not terrible rapper, and someone that will make people stop complaining about there not being anyone good. In a twist of hilarious irony, earlier on the same day this announcement was made, another news story came out regarding T.I.--that he has been sentenced to prison time. Awesome. Total street cred. Or something. Here is the text of a news item:

This morning, a Northern Georgia District judge sentenced T.I. to a year and a day in prison, asMTV reports. T.I. was arrested in a 2007 sting operation when he tried to illegally buy guns. This sentence isn't a surprise at all; T.I. struck a deal last year for a year in prison and 1500 hours of community service. He's beendocumenting his quest to fulfill his community service obligations on the MTV reality show"T.I.'s Road to Redemption".

Apparently, T.I.'s plea bargain is an enormous celebrity sweetheart deal. As the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports, the rapper faced a minimum sentence of four years and nine months in prison before he struck the deal. As MTV explains, "The sentence is notable, according to legal experts, because of the specific length. If T.I. were to be sentenced to one year in prison, for example, he would be required to complete the entire sentence. The sentence of one year and one day could allow T.I. to be released earlier for good behavior, if warranted." So he could be out after about ten months behind bars.

T.I. is due to report to prison within the next six to eight weeks, but as MTV reports, his judge noted this morning that he has obligations that may prevent him from entering prison before May 19.
