Movie Night

For the past few years, I've been bad about seeing the Academy Award nominees.  I know I'm going to be especially this year.  I have no desire whatsoever to see Avatar, and I have this feeling that it's going to sweep the show this year.

One category I'm really pulling for though is the best animated feature.  I was really excited to see Disney return to the traditional animation with The Princess and the Frog, and the movie proved to be excellent (at least in my humble opinion).  Unfortunately, it didn't do big at the box office and I think because of that, it's going to miss an award it greatly deserves.

The best animated award will probably go to Up, which I just finished watching with Pete and Dan.  I thought it was a wonderful movie, but I'm still feeling my loyalty tied to Frog.  I don't know.  I think that while there was a great story line for the Pixar flick and there was a lot of emotion in it, to me it was just another Pixar pic.  There's usually one a year and to me, lately, their work just seems to be running together.

I think the big thing for me with Frog was that it returned to the classic elements of when Disney was in it's prime in the 90's.  Not only was it classically drawn, but there was the element of classic songs, strong characters, and being immersed in a new world.  To me, I get chills every time I hear "Friends on the Other Side," "Never Knew I Needed," and "Almost There," that shadow man had me freaked while Tiana's determination inspired me, and it helped me just fall in love with New Orleans without ever being there.

I don't know.  I'm just wondering/hoping that there will be an upset in that category.  If anything, I encourage anybody reading this to see both movies and give me their opinion.

up, princess and the frog, peter, friends, dan, academy awards
