I finally got over to the local Joann's that is closing/moving/combining with another store to become a super store. Not only was everything on sale, but they were discounting an additional 10% of the posted discount. So, I kind of went a little wild. My big splurge was on cotton velvet. I was just looking for velveteen, but I hated the colors they had left--just a bright green and a bright red, like Christmas bright. I decided to take a turn through the decorator fabrics since they sometimes (rather rarely) carry some decent silks in that department. Instead of silk (absolutely NO silk) I found this delicious cotton velvet--the real deal with a soft nap--in this rich burnt orange/rust color. Not necessarily a flattering color on me, but I thought it would be perfect for a Tudor gown. They only had a little over 4 and a half yards, but I figure I can use a coupon to pick up more at another store. (I already stopped by the other closing store to see if they had any. They only had two bolts of a horrid yellow the color of baby food or diluted mustard. Yuck.
Of course, that wasn't all I bought. I bought some brown velvet ribbon (the trims were half off, how could I resist?), some vintage-looking buttons (also half off), and some very soft, fuzzy-bunny type yarn. My other sort of splurge was on a knitting start up kit. Yes, I think I might cave in a actually teach myself to knit. I love crocheting because it's something that I can work on fairly mindlessly, because if I screw up, I just pull out my stitches. Not so easy to do with knitting--trust me, I've tried. Of course, I think I was about 10 or 11 years old, so I'm hoping that knitting might make a bit more sense now that I'm older. Anyway, I'd like to eventually play around with historic knitting patterns and even making my own socks (that's the real pull--pretty socks!). Of course, there are a lot of historic crochet patterns out there, but mostly from the 1890's and later. There's a little from the 1860's and 70's, but far more knitting patterns, including more stuff that is actually functional rather than just decorative.
Okay, I should maybe go to bed. I've got a ton of stuff to do tomorrow morning before my brothers come over for a BBQ.
