The Strike and Grey's

In addition to Shonda Rhimes supporting the strike, I read this morning that Sandra Oh is refusing to cross the picket lines. Word is that episode 11 will not be finished. So it looks like we won't be getting the episodes they have scripts for, just what's in the can already.

Well, it's a reasonable decision. And I have a whole ton of DVDs I can watch.

But as a general thing, strikes are annoying to those like me who don't have a stake in the process. I think if I understood it better, I wouldn't be so annoyed.

Basically the writers want a cut of stuff distributed via the internet. If I watch Grey's on the ABC website, the writer gets nothing, even though ABC is getting advertising dollars from that viewing. The studios claim internet airings are 'promotional' and aren't covered.

That's a problem everywhere for writers, even in countries like Ireland and Britain where, legally, they're still owed royalties for online publishing. One of my tuors in college is also a journalist for an Irish newspaper and she finds herself in a similar predicament.

It's especially annoying when the newspapers(etc)charge for access to the site, as is common for newspaper sites here. The papers are making money out of articles they haven't paid the rights for many journalists in Ireland, feel uneasy about complaining as it's hard to find work in journalism here and people don't like to get a reputation for being 'difficult'.

If memory serves me correctly, the writers had to go to the table before to get residuals from shows airing in syndication...
