Felt like I should have had a note pinned to me today

So I got into some major trouble in my class today.  Totally not my fault though.  Seriously why say its a discussion when you don't want differing opinions?  Either way... topic was about morality, a person's sense of right and wrong and whether they are something that is internally or externally expressed.

My stance on it was that you aren't defined by your morality or your sense of right and wrong.  Rather your morality and sense of right and wrong are defined by who you are.  You can have thoughts of what it'd be like to kill the person sitting next to you but that's all they are.  You can think of lots of different things but your choices are what define you and you are what define your morals and sense of right and wrong.  Someone can tell you that something is wrong or right or that your morality should prevent thoughts like that but just because someone tells you that does that necessarily mean that you are defined by it?  Stealing is universally accepted as wrong but if you're stealing because you have no other options available to you does that make you a bad person?  Does killing to protect your family make your moral compass flawed in some manner because when presented with the choice of your family and another you chose to save your family?

Needless to say I was already being shouted at before I'd even finished my point and it all just went downhill from there.  *sigh and pout*  What's the point of it being a class where open discussion is encouraged if I present an opinion and then I'm reprimanded by the professor because I didn't do the 'sensible' thing and keep my mouth shut.

Seriously thinking about dropping the class...
