Wherein I try to organize my ficrecs

Apr 25, 2011 23:32

Hi, this is a huge mess, and very much not fit for public consumption yet.

Okay. Okay, fine. I GIVE IN. I will write a rec post. This is going to take weeks, possibly months! (But I won't go so far as years. I hope.)

I am ashamed to note that a great deal of these are stories for which I have yet to leave feedback, but I live in hope that I will eventually remedy the situation. I'm trying to do better about leaving feedback as I go, I just need to catch up on the backlog. We're going to try to start with Fics Which Are Awesome and then move onto Authors Who Are Awesome, because that seems neater. Since this is me, it's more a guideline than a rule.

Major Pieces, which will forever live in my head as "the chess fic." I love this. I am not usually a fan of "what Moriarty does next" fics, mostly because authors are either too manic or too boring (that would be Jim's boring, not Sherlock's, even if they do coincide), but this story is beautiful.
Sherlock knew that he could thoroughly rely upon John Watson's moral sense. And that's why he knew that Lestrade was wrong, wrong, wrong.

"An hour's history of two minds is well told in a game of chess." - José Raúl Capablanca

It Practically Gallops. READ THIS. DO NOT QUESTION, JUST READ. Six thousand words, which goes by so very quickly that I'm allowed to call it short, and just... yes. More Holmes-family fic. Please.
Sherlock isn't the youngest Holmes brother.

Holmes-Breaking, a fic which proves it is perfectly possible to be cracky and proper in the Sherlock fandom.
John has finally had enough, and decides to find out if you can teach a theoretically-post-adolescent feline new tricks.

Adequacies. All I have in my notes: "Leopards. (: Also, it describes John as smelling of soap and integrity."
Nightmares, dilemmas and an invisible leopard in the house.

Five Times Sherlock Listened to John’s Heartbeat and One Time John Listened to Sherlock’s. This is my perfect sort of fic - leaving aside case fic, anyway, which can be hit or miss. It's so very clearly the characters, and just enough insight to be satisfying. I can't say I wouldn't prefer the scenes all be connected in the story rather than set apart, but it feels like glimpses into their lives and it's lovely.
For a kinkmeme prompt: Sherlock is obsessed with John's heartbeat.

Not Your Average Threesoe Series: John/Lestrade + Sherlock I avoided this for a while (Lestrade/John seemed like a bad plan), but I'm glad I gave in and tried. Only complaint is that it ended, and I would love to see more.
Your basic story of two men struggling to hook up while a sociopathic consulting detective dogs their every move.

Light Our Own Fires. I am not, generally speaking, a fan of post-1.03 fics. This is an exception. ("We can talk about whatever you want," John says. "But let's not make the mistake of calling ourselves normal people.")
Sherlock won't give up looking for Moriarty; John is losing patience. Neither of them are coping as well as they would like. Post for 1.03, more details in notes.

Space Travel. Banter. Banter is my bread, my water, and my joy in life.
The night the aliens came was the first time John understood the extent of his predicament.

The Shape I Found You In. Wow. It... there are text messages and beauty. irisbleu is a wonder in all things, and I knew that before this, but it's been spectacularly proven.
In which Sherlock invades Sweden, John watches too much questionable television, Things Are Finally Talked About, and absence makes the heart grow odder.

It's Complicated. In which there is Facebook, Mycroft, and Sherlock backstory. Truly a must-read.
On the case of a suspected Arms Dealer, John finds himself roped in to accompanying Sherlock on a Reunion Party from Hell. Why has everybody at the party already heard all about John? Why does Sherlock keep behaving so oddly around one of the guests? And what does any of this have to do with a car crash that happened 20 years before?

Disaster, Want, and Tea: A Christmas Carol. Seasonal fic can be enjoyed throughout the year. And joy is definitely the proper word for this. ♥
It's a game they play. Engaging, though it could be improved. Sherlock always wins by default: he never runs.

Like Leaves & Kings (All Things Must Fall). Yes. Just... Yes. This is John and Sherlock as they're meant to be, even in the midst of some serious mania. Somewhat because of said mania.
Sherlock is the worst roommate in the world. John suffers him less gladly than he could, but better than most. [I recognize that this is basically a summary of the canon. Sue me. Summaries are hard.]

The Case of the Interloper. The parts! Inception + Sherlock = yay! It's also known as "The Case of Arthur and the Nemesis", and Sherlock v. Arthur is very fun.
“What if I told you I knew the world’s only consulting detective?” Eames asks.

“I’d ask what the fuck that is,” Arthur says, and Eames only answers with a huff of laughter.

everyone knows i'm in [a sherlock ficmix]. This is a really strange format - it's a fanmix, but with storybits attached to each song, and the storybits follow a main flow. Sweet and nerve-wracking. I can't say anything of the music - skipped the song bits, really - but the story is sound, and it takes a spectacular path to proving its point. (I seem to prefer Sherlock pov, but have very few people I trust to write him properly. A conundrum.)
John takes one look at Sherlock Holmes, and his ears pop.

Breakfast at 221B. Not certain how I feel about the concept, but it's a fun Sherlock + John conversation.
"Anyway. Enough of my embarrassing sibling brothel stories. Tell me yours."

A Sherlock conversation, over breakfast.

Homemaking. Somewhat more (and less) functional than what's shown in later episodes of the series, but I like it. There's Clara and shopping and John's neverending realization that he's the wife of the relationship.
The original plan for returning to England involved fucking around being shellshocked and suffering mandatory post-combat counseling and physical therapy to dissect the shattered mosaic of his feelings. That's not quite how it goes.

Sheep's Clothing. Conspicuously unended (unresolved romantic tension? unresolved pining is perhaps a better phrase), but alright. John and John's jumpers. (I feel like this fandom learned a half dozen "British" words and must use them at every possible opportunity)
Sherlock contemplates John's striped sweater.

etothepii's fics are musts. There is no other word for them but musts. This means they have to all sit in their own category, so that I don't end every rec with "but he wrote it, of course I found myself liking it" ... It's a common theme. (Generally speaking, these are Sherlock/John. I am ignoring the top/bottom methodology forever.)

Sic Gorgiamus Allos Subjectatos Nunc, also known (along with its two sequels) as "that Addams Family crossover." So freaking good. Yes, it's weird. Read it anyway.
"Sic gorgiamus allos subjectatos nunc. It's the family motto." "What does it mean?" "We gladly feast on those who would subdue us."

Asteroidea + its sequels (linked there), which is the His Dark Materials fic set, and the reason I need to read HDM. It's absolutely beautiful, and I really don't know what else to say about it. Just read it, alright? There is Mycroft, and there is Sherlock and John and beauty. Go.
In the pocket of his trousers, next to his phone, Mycroft carries the standard-issue steel capsule meant for protecting arthropod daemons. When people ask about it, he smiles and tells them she's not fond of the light, or of people other than himself. This is a lie.

I Used to Live Alone Before I Knew You, which is the Good Omens cross. Are you sensing a theme? Of glory? Again, please just read this.
Where Mycroft is an angel, Sherlock is a demon, and John is still John.

you need someone (but it won't be me). I really adore this series. It's set in a BDSM-world, which is (like most of the other 'verses by this author) not something I thought I needed in my life, but apparently I did. Badly. It's also one of the few fics where I am okay with there being elements of Sherlock/Lestrade.
The first time he sees Sherlock's driving license, Lestrade is sure it's a skilled forgery, though why Sherlock would want the little black S as his role instead of a D, he has no idea.

they tell me their secrets (will you tell me yours too). John speaks to objects. I have so much love for this story. So much. If I could have a super power (or strange ability), I would either be able to speak to / hear objects or be an itemfinder. Things are fun, okay?
In Afghanistan, the supplies tell him when they're running low, and the cars always, always tell him when strangers have touched them, and John gets known as having a knack (paranoia, his men call it, but he's never missed a single car bomb) for keeping his men safe.

It Feels like Home when I'm With You. When I linked to this initially, the description was "I told myself I wouldn't read this, but I can hardly say I regret it. Ghost!John, which I minded much less than I should. etothepii is beautiful", which about sums it up.
John still gets nightmares about Afghanistan. That's the worst part of it all, he thinks -- he still has dreams about sand and drowning to death in his own blood. But they're more memory than nightmare.

You Call Me Like the Moon. Given the title, the fact that John is a werewolf should be most important. However, it's the fact that Sherlock is psychic that makes this beyond awesome.
John's a doctor. But when he's not a doctor, he's a werewolf.

I'm going to stop this now, but there's more on eljay here or on AO3 here. I have not yet read all of them (somehow the John/Anthea fic is more frightening than the Mycroft/John/Mycroft or Mycroft/Sherlock), but I have enjoyed all of the ones I have read.

Skewed Data. Accidental pettings! ... what, you find a better description. (Sherlock/John)
It's not intentional, not the first time.

The World on a String. John is abducted; Sherlock finds him.
There are people we break all the rules for.

May edit in descriptors later, but for now... both are awesome authors, just give the stories a shot.

(http://out-there.dreamwidth.org/1141703.html also good, rather long. I honestly don't remember what it is beyond that I liked it.)

A Matter of Perspective. This one hurts. Rather a lot. I am not joking, it hurts. It is also astonishingly lovely, and you really ought to read it. (You’re being an idiot, the analytical part of his brain told him. You observe, but you do not understand. The analytical part of his brain had Mycroft’s voice. Sherlock hoped it was a joke, because the fact that Mycroft might be inside his head was merely improbable and he didn’t think the British government should be left unattended.)
[ no summary given ]

Somniphobia.
Sherlock has always been a bit of an insomniac.

The Art of Scheduling, or, How Mycroft Came to Realize He was Well and Truly Fucked. Mycroft/Anthea. Because really. Told in a series of appointment notes.
It suited him, and he assumed it suited her for she'd never given any indication otherwise.

I.. could probably rec all of this person's things, but we'll go with this (which hurts at the same time it makes me smile)...

http://grabi-hands.livejournal.com/55357.html#cutid1

... and this. Which is... I don't have words, but it's beautiful.

Positively Angelic. 2009 canon, and lovely for it.
