my universe will never be the same but i'm glad you came

It wasn't very often tha Rebekah found a present that was guaranteed to intrigue her brother.  She wouldn't say it was a present that would make Elijah smile, not with his morals and his honor code but she knew he would definitely be intrigued but what she had found.  She knew that she was but she hadn't sated her curiosity because she figured he ( Read more... )

"I don't know." Rebekah slid the knife away, looking over at Elijah with a strange sense of delight. "I thought maybe she was a vampire or a werewolf but she's not as far as I can tell. Beyond that, I don't know."

It was then they could hear the slight change in the girl's breath, a sign that she was starting to wake up.

At first, Claire was disoriented and a little lost. She was in bed...no, on a bed. Definitely not where she had been if her memories were at all correct. Shifting her weight, she groaned a little bit as she felt strange without really knowing why. No, wait, she recognized the sensation. It was the same cloudiness that usually fogged her mind for a moment or two after she came back from being killed.

Alarm ripped through her as she realized that there was a chance she had been killed. Her eyes snapped open then, taking in the two forms that were standing nearby though it still took her a second or two to react. Scrambling up and back, she stared at the seemingly young woman and man standing at the edge of the bed.

"Where am I?" She demanded with hardly a flicker of fear.

Elijah continued to stare at her for a long time, the twisting sensation of excitement running through him a rare thing, and something to be treasured. There was so very little new in this world, so little to intrigue, and this girl...well. She was new, different. He tilted his head, studying her as she moved, listening to her question, to the lack of real fear behind it, then moved to sit on the edge of the bed.

"You're in my home," he told her, all polite calm. "You had an...accident. My sister brought you here. What's your name?"

They were a stunning couple, Claire could see that, but that didn't mean she was just going to warm up to them. Suspicion darkened her green eyes as she looked first to the girl and then to the man who was sitting on the edge of the bed suddenly. Shifting back a bit further, she glanced toward the windows, gauging how far they were from the bed while wondering if she could make it.

Switching her attention back to the man, she took note of the polite tone he was using but she had heard that tone plenty of times.

"I did not have an accident, your sister attacked me." She bit out in a chilly tone, sliding towards the opposite edge of the bed. "And I need to go now."

He could have denied it, but amusement flickered in his eyes for a moment instead. "Yes, well. She can be a bit...precipitous that way. But look at you--you're fine. And that is...exceptionally interesting." His voice was still perfectly polite, even and cultured and without any blatant threat in it.

But there was a sort of hunger in his eyes. He held himself in check so often, but his actions in Mystic Falls had forced him to accept his mother was right. He was as much a monster as any of the others, and sometimes...he got so tired of being good. Especially when it just got him a death sentence along with the others.

"What are you?" he asked, still in that tone of polite interest. He could see her edging away, but he was hardly a concern. There was nothing on this earth faster than he and his siblings. If she made a run for it, she'd find that out.

There was something about that cultured politeness that sent a chill down Claire's spine, especially when she saw the hunger in his eyes and the dangerous little sparkle in the eyes of the one he called his sister. Rebekah watched the events unfold with interest and excitement, already sensing the hunger in Elijah as he continued to speak to the girl.

"I don't know what you mean." The lie rolled off of Claire's tongue as though she had practiced it a million times. "I'm just a girl."

"We already know you can heal, sweetheart." Rebekah replied silkily, moving around to the end of the bed as she watched the other blonde move towards the end of the bed.

There was a dark flicker there as Claire realized they knew what she could deal, her eyes narrowing in annoyance as she slid off the bed to stand up, her eyes flickering towards the window again. It was closer than the door and if she could break through the glass, then she would be free. Injured, briefly, but free.

"And it's fairly useless to lie to us about it," Elijah added, still not moving from where he sat, even when she stood. "My sister is very good at telling when someone's lying. It's her special gift. And I...can hear how your heartbeat jumps." Call them the undead lie detectors or something. He couldn't tell nearly as well with vampires who didn't have jumpy heartbeats, but Rebekah's gift came in handy there.

"If you're thinking about running, I'd advise against it." He took his eyes off of her for a moment to straighten his cuffs. "You're not going anywhere."

And running from predators was never a good idea. It just made them want to chase. But then again, maybe she had no idea just how predatory they were, yet.

"What? She's a human lie detector?" Claire asked dryly, her eyes flickering to the other woman once more but then her eyes flickered to him as she blinked. "You can hear my heartbeat?"

Already she was trying to figure out who and what they were. She was no stranger to predators or people like her trying to capture her and she had always ran from them. so even as he advised her not to run, that's exactly what she tried to do. She took a lunge towards the window but didn't make it far before suddenly she was being slammed into the nearest wall. There was no pain but it did still her breath for a second before she looked up into the sneering features of the blonde sister.

"Don't you listen, he said don't run." Rebekah hissed sharply even if this was all a game.

Elijah flicked a glance at Rebekah, that hunger still twisting up with amusement--though clearly growing, before he looked back at the girl.

"I did warn you," he said mildly. He didn't bother repeating that, yes, he could hear her heartbeat.

"Do sit back down." He waved a hand back at the bed. "You can do it of your own volition, or we can make you. This will be so much more civilized if you just cooperate."

Either way, she was most certainly not leaving until he had some answers, and a taste of her.

Rebekah smirked a little, pulling Claire away from the wall before shoving her gently towards the bed. Moving back, she then put herself between the girl and the window though she could stop her from any spot in the bedroom if she wanted.

Casting a look over her shoulder, Claire dared to glare at the other blonde before turning back to look at the man. She was still completely unaware of what she was dealing with, thinking this was a different kind of situation as she fixed him with an unimpressed look. She didn't try to run again but she didn't sit down either.

Instead she lifted her chin defiantly, crossing her arms over her chest as she looked at him. "Look, if you're working for my grandmother or someone else, go back and tell them I'm not interested in whatever they want. I just want to be left alone, got it?"

The amusement was clearer now, and Elijah leaned a little against the bedpost, otherwise staying right where he was. "Why on Earth do you think we'd be working for your grandmother? That's almost as interesting as your little healing trick."

She most certainly wasn't a vampire, or a wolf, but her blood smelled different, even so. Human, but...different.

"You're not going to be left alone unless you sit down and answer our questions. Here's an easy one--what's your name?"

She probably wasn't going to be left alone even after she answered his questions, and if he got annoyed enough, he'd just compel her to do so, but for right now the civil conversation amused him, even as the lingering scent of her blood in the room provoked a far more primal response.

Claire wanted to smack him for his smug behaviour because clearly he enjoyed having power just a little too much. She had seen that in quite a few people actually and it was annoying when she was on the other side of it, incapable of doing anything but playing along for a short while.

When he asked why she thought that they were working for her grandmother, she didn't bother answering or explaining why she thought that because that would be revealing a little too much if they didn't know who Angela was. If they didn't, that meant they weren't from Primatech which was a relief in its own way and yet not. If they were from Primatech, there was a chance she wouldn't be hurt.

Drawing in a breath, she weighed her options before finally answering. "Claire."

"Hello, Claire. I'm Elijah. This is Rebekah." He nodded at his sister, and if he thought that she might realize that giving her their names meant they were far less likely to release her, he didn't mind the extra layer of uncertainty for her. Truthfully, he and his sister were in no danger he could tell, even if they did let her go. They'd just compel her to forget.

"Won't you sit down, please?"

Claire couldn't see the way Rebekah wrinkled her nose at the reveal of Claire's name or the brief glance that she sent Elijah. Clearly she didn't really care for Claire's name as she found it a bit plain. Maybe it was something they could change...

Sighing softly, Claire glanced at the bed and the short space there would be between them if she sat down. There was a chair though and so she moved towards it, determined to put more space between them as though she thought that would somehow keep her safer. Not that the fact that being on a bed with an attractive man had anything to do with it. He was an attractive man who was keeping her hostage at the moment.

"There, happy?" She asked as she sat down.

"Not yet, but that's better," Elijah murmured, just loud enough for her to hear. Rebekah's distaste at her name was amusing, and he was perfectly willing to rename the girl if they decided to keep her. It had been a while since he'd done anything like that--Klaus was always killing them too quickly back in the day. It was hard to keep a pet around.

"Now--what are you?" He smiled, though it had an edge to it. "Once again, you can tell me, or I can make you tell me, but I think you'll find the first far more...satisfying."

He used compulsion when he needed it, or didn't feel like a fight, but it was a little distasteful to have a bunch of automatons running around--unless they were the help.

Claire wasn't sure she wanted to know what would actually make him happy and she pushed those ideas from her head as she tucked some hair back from her face. She didn't want to tell them what she was but what was the point of hiding it when they already knew.

"I'm...a metahuman." She hated the term but it was better than saying she was a mutant or something else along those terms.

"What does that mean?" Rebekah sought clarification.

"It means I have a power." Claire directed at her before looking to Elijah again. "Which you already saw. It's been described as rapid cellular regeneration which means I heal. Fast." Among other things but fuck it if she was actually going to tell them that.

"Metahuman," Elijah repeated. And rapid cellular regeneration. "So very...scientific." He glanced at Rebekah. "Not magic at all it seems, then, but some new...breed."

The theory of evolution said it had to happen, eventually--humans evolving into something new. He hadn't really expected to see it, even if they lived forever.

His attention switched back to Claire. "That is...supremely fascinating. Are there limits to your healing capacities?" He wasn't sure just how badly Rebekah had hurt her before bringing her here, after all.
