Today we took the local train to Nara (something of about 50 minutes away). The main attraction of Nara is that it is relatively small and everything is in walkable distance.
The main street that leads to the city attractions (temples and shrines, I will get to it soon) felt like Disneyland or something, for they had speakers around the road that played music and announcements.
Nothing much to see in the city besides temples and shrines. I know, again, right? But what was nice about them this time was that they were a bit unique in their own right, and the nice weather (relatively, I was still wearing three layers of clothing) helped a lot.
The temple, which is said the be the largest wooden building in the world, housed one very large bronze statue of Buddha. 16 meters tall, it was really impressive and well worth the admission. At the gate of the temple, there were two other impressive statues carved from wood.
We didn't enter the shrine itself, but its uniqueness came from the pathway to it. On both sides there were lots of stone lanterns that gave this place its character.
After we got home, the both of us crashed for a few hours. I guess the days of traveling in Kyoto's area (on foot!) got to us. As this is the last night, we packed most of our stuff and tomorrow morning we are catching the train to Nikko, where we'll stay for the next two nights. (Not sure if we'll have Internet access there).
