Quick, do you know who Karen Allen is? She’s an actress.
If you don’t know the name, she was Marian Ravenwood in Raiders of the Lost Ark and Katy, Boon’s girlfriend, the girl that sleeps with Donald Sutherland’s character in Animal House.
It’s kind of weird; she’s been in two of the biggest pop culture-intensive movies of all time, and she’s not a big named actress. Most people don’t know her name.
Everyone knows who Ashton Kutcher is, but chances are that not a single one of his films will be remembered as truly great, or referenced for decades to come. Well, maybe, Dude Where’s My Car, every time some ‘hilarious’ tool walks out of Urban Outfitters, and can’t immediately place his automobile.
It’s sort of like how everyone knows about, “play it again, Sam (not actually in the movie),” or the ‘hill of beans’ speech from Casablanca are well known to most pop-savvy people, but very few of those have actually watched Casablanca.
We have all these cultural touchstones that were meant to know, but not the actual stories and people behind them, yet, still kneel at the cult of celebrity and must learn everything about every actor that graces the cover of a magazine.
