Day 66: Four-Color Funnybooks for 04-09-08

A solid, solid, solid week and it gets three “solid’s” because while there wasn’t a lot of amazing stuff, each issue is setting up their arcs for a spectacular finish.  A month or two from now all of these issues are going to pay off big.

Booster Gold #8 - It’s amazing how good this series is.  Booster Gold, as a character, is a fucking joke.  He’s ( Read more... )

Dude I can't fucking say enough about Nova. Brubaker and Fraction leaving Iron Fist is going to kill me but Nova, motherfucking Nova is going to keep me going. The thing that I liked the most about this issue is that nobody died. In comics these days it seems like they're just constantly killing people off. This book opens with Drax and Gammora transformed into a Babel Spire, fucking Warlock, who is a character so goddamn obscure he might as well be wearing a red shirt, and Warlock's loose-cannon protege. They set this whole issue up as if to kill every last one of these assholes off and in the end we have them all back and ready for killing time.

Drax is one of the best supporting characters ever, and he's never been as good as he has in this book. Even in the rest of Annihilation he was cold and distant, but in Nova he was making jokes with Quasar and Nova like Hawkeye or some shit. Fucking brilliant.

I like the idea of Booster Gold and I think I know enough of what's going on to appreciate it, but it's true that I just don't care enough about the DC universe to be totally invested in this book. Except this issue. Because there's not a team alive that I'd prefer over Green Arrow, Hawkman, Blue Beetle, and motherfucking Wild Dog. I'm really upset that particular team-up didn't go so well.

The other things I picked up this week were random and not new. Moon Knight is getting better, but not in a way you'd like, I think. The art is slightly better, and the story has kind of removed focus from Marc Spector so it's got this really interesting 70's crime movie about a vigilante... oddly enough I'm reminded of the Wolfen.

Other awesome things were fucking Rogues in the House, the last Conan trade, I think, drawn by Cary Nord, who I will miss, but Tim Truman does a phenomenal job. Last time I checked in with you on this it wasn't quite your thing, but to me this is probably my favorite book that I only read in trade.

I also finished Preacher after years and years, started working on Hellboy, and got the new Jack of Fables trade.

Alright, I'm gonna go hump the fridge

Nova and Drax and Kosmo the space dog will all appear in the new Guardians of the Galaxy by the Nova writers. It should appear sometime after Annihilation finishes.

The underground in Booster Gold had no chance. Red Staters and Blue Staters will never live in harmony. FACT.

I dug Busiek and Nord on Conan, but not enough that it doesn't constantly get bumped in my trade-buying queue. Them's the breaks, huh?

You won't be disappointed by Hellboy. In terms of trades, I'm going back through 100 Bullets since the series is going to wrap up in the next year.

I gotta go fondle my sweaters.
