I couldn’t get to the comic store last week, so we’ll just do both weeks now, since the pickings from both are rather slim.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #4 - Joss Whedon just writes damn exciting comics. The guy has a gift for cliffhangers that keep making you want to come back again and again.  Even here, in the fourth issue that wraps up the very ( Read more... )

i'll have to say .. i've been super busy, so i haven't read much of what i've bought (also b/c i'm reading matt's captain america trades... and loving them... btw, reading this run AFTER having read the death issue really makes you think that he has been planning on killing cap this whole time; the first 20 pages of the first trade, in hindsight, feel like nothing but really obvious foreshadowing).... anyway, i have bought a bit. i don't think it's been as slim of two weeks as you all make it out ( ... )

I totally agree with your thoughts on Cap. Brubaker definitely knows what he's doing.

Now, do you mean the Boys will out preacher Preacher? Is it in terms of shock value? Because right now, I've got to say it doesn't have a tenth of Preacher's heart.

I hope the Burlyman books come out in trade as I loved your issues of Shaolin Cowboy. I mean come on, name a book more tailored for me. Also, their Doc Frankestein is really intriguing.

I may buy the next two months of Scalped and not read them, and get the trade in August. I hope Vertigo makes it super cheap like the first collections of DMZ (yeah!) and Loveless (kinda meh).

yeah - i think he means shock value only .... it's not as all-around solid as preacher...

and loveless...my god ... i keep buying it, mostly because i feel like i should... i like it, but i don't love it ... and for me, i guess thats a lot, b/c i'm a sucker for a lot of crap...

I honestly dropped Loveless because the style is trying so hard to be moody or noir, that everyone's hat puts a shadow over their eyes, and then everyone's got a beard, so you can't tell anyone apart.

I just picked up the Samurai Detective/Sam Noir trade, which is the first non-Invincible Image purchase I've made since I was really into the Darkness (they're making a video game by the way. Looking back the Darkness was a bit hackneyed but this game looks amazing). It's style is a lot like that, but you can tell the main character more often than not and the rest are usually just about to get stabbed. It's a good read if you haven't checked it out yet.

Oh, and I just thought of/found something when looking through, putting away all my old comics: Garth Ennis, can write about superheroes fucking people in the ass all he wants. He can deconstruct the superhero mythos for the rest of his beer be-sotten life, but he wrote one of the most achingly beautiful superhero stories in "Hitman #34: Of Thee I Sing. (not in trade)"

Tommy's speech to a heartbroken Superman gets to the very essence of superhero comics and speaks to why they still exist to this day.
